A company driver can also use " line 5 ", if his company allows the driver to use their truck as personal conveyance. But the law is fairly restrictive on when and how it can be used. First is it can only be used when unladen and not enroute to your next load. You pretty much have to be bobtailing out and back to the same place you left your trailer for it be used right. It isn't just a freebie line to do whatever you want.

Most companies don't allow their drivers to use the "Line 5" option because it opens them up to abuse and liability.

If something happens while a driver is driving the truck, and they are driving, on duty, and engaged in company business, and everything is legal, then there are a lot less legal issues than if a driver is supposedly using the vehicle for personal business.

If you're an hour away from home and you're out of hours, that's how it is. It doesn't matter if paper logs would allow you to drive... you're still driving illegally. I don't care whether you agree with the law or not, it's the law, and if you don't like it, there's lots of other jobs out there. No one is forcing you to be a trucker.

And FYI, $1000 per week take home is a decent salary, even nowadays. Unless you are an owner operator, you're not going to take home much more than that, maybe a couple hundred more, but not much. If you're looking for something way up there like $3000 per week take home, you need to be an owner operator. How many jobs do you know of that you can make over $1000 per week without many years of training and experience? Not many. I take home about that much and I've only been driving a year. Pretty #### good if you ask me. Hell, if you we're in any other industry, you'd have to be a CEO or President of a company in order to take home what an owner operator can take home in this industry.

Like others said, I'm sorry it isn't working out for you. Maybe trucking is not your thing. Remember that trucking is one of the most heavily regulated industries in the country. If you don't like following the rules, please do all of us and the public a favor and choose another line of work.

I know there are a lot of long time drivers out there that miss the days when they could run two logbooks. But those days are coming to an end, and I'm sorry, but I have NO TOLERANCE for drivers who insist on breaking the law. If you do so, I sincerely hope you get caught, before you crash into me on the interstate.

I am a company driver with Elogs & I have what they call line 5 or off duty driving. As long as I'm not loaded or on my way to pick up a load, I have 50 min. Available to me every day. This means when I get unloaded, I can switch to off duty driving & go to the t/s. You just have to state what you are using it for.

Driving home can be legally used as personal conveyance. Just because it may be against company policy doesn't conclude that it's illegal.

I predict within 7 or 8 years elogs will be required by law. If you go over hours a ticket will be mailed to you. Think the industry is over regulated now? Wait a few more years.

I agree, it'll go just like Europe , over-regulated to the point of stupidity

Some people are passionate about driving, and that's what they do it for.
