god willing, I'm thinking about leaving the industry around November, and heading back to school. My question is if you were 23 in my shoes with some coin saved up, what would you do? I'm leaning towards electrician or HVAC or possibly navy / air force for trade skills.... but im not picky by any means(i just dont know where to look). if i do have any requirements its simply balance, meaning 8 hours of work being enough to live on, 8hours for myself / family that i dont have yet, and 7-8 hours of sleep. relocating would not be an issue, i'm actually aiming to leave the financial suicide state of California. All ideas will be looked at and appreciated

I would look at taking some business classes, get a 2 year AA degree in Business Management.
For that, I'd focus it all on writing a business plan to purchase a truck.
Then after I was gone for my AA, I'd go find a small company to lease my truck on to and then become an O/O and buy a reefer. Food will always have to move. It isn't all produce ya know.
Pay off that truck, keep your nose clean and just work and save. Don't buy all kinds of toys.
Save your pennies, invest it wisely in mutual funds and retirement and by the time you are 45-50, you can retire from life with that income source sitting in the yard and only have to work during the peak 3-5 months of the year.
#### I wished I had listened to those 45-50 yo truckers who had told me that 24 years ago.
Yeah, I went and followed the "greener pastures" and got a 4 year degree. It's still a dog eat dog world out there. -
You can't leave. You just think you can leave. You'll be back, 6 days, 6 weeks, 6 months.

The Navy has excellent HVAC schooling for their ships systems. The Navy SeaBees uses truck drivers & also has HVAC schooling for their construction jobs.
If you have too many dependents, the military might not let you join.
If you leave CA, consider a state with no personal income tax, so you can keep more of your paycheck. There are 9 of them, including Nevada & Texas.
Military Sealift Command has entry level jobs available, and you will need TWIC for those jobs. Their website has a short film about these jobs.truckintime, mje and Marky84 Thank this. -
What is making you leave the industry? Things are good financially or you hate being away from home? Im younger than you and got bit by the truck bug. Plus the money is a plenty
mje Thanks this. -

1st hand knowledge here. The best skilled jobs here in Tennessee are Industrial maint. 21 yr olds are coming out of two year tech school. 800 dollars a semester. Starting out making 20 dollars/hr. Top pay for industrial maint. is around 32.00/hr. Companies are having a hard time finding skilled industrial maint. techs. Also,Tennessee has no income tax. Tool and die is one of the highest paying skilled jobs.
truckintime and mje Thank this.
