That's incorrect.
I have the same problem. The engine has 800,000 miles on her and because of the cold weather she is leaking under every seal imagenable.
I took the turbo off and there was lots of oil residue on the exaust side. However there was also wet leakage coming from the exhaust manifold.
We took the turbo off and did a pressure test to see if the turbo was leaking and she was not.
However when we started the truck up she poured blue/white smoke out of the exaust manifold.
On the last trip I did a trailer switch in Windsor On. When she pulled away I could see blue smoke coming out of the stacks and she used 4 gallons in 2000 miles. Thats from leaking and oil consuption.
Back to the O/P
They quoted me around $15,000 for a complete rebuild minus the turbo I believe.
However I found a 2000 DD s60 500hp the same engine that's in mine. The engine came out of a Peterbuilt that was rebuilt about 115,000miles before the driver rolled her over. The engine with the installation is going to cost me around $7,000. I heard the engine run and did an oil sample I also have the paperwork on the rebuild.
This might be one option to consider the other might be an inframe which would cost around $8,000
Good luck.

Jd Have you started?
I am a new member and have the same predicament.
I would like to know how you approached this.
Thank you popeye in texas -
First off buy your parts off FP ( federal mogul )genuine parts for half the price - inframe gives you liner kits , main and big end bearings thrust washers head bolts cam bearings and full gasket set then get yourself a repair manual , liner heights minimum 0.0015" buy or make yourself a puller for the camshaft hub and it,s no different too any other four stroke diesel- need a hand ask ask the forum

What you need to do is find a shop that is a non dealer i been through this i know the cylinder packs are bout $550 A hole and bearings are around $550 i just put a new remand head on mine bout 2weeks ago it was 1800 id use factory parts if it was me and that one has all steel piston as well .I know of a shop using. a brand of parts name Mahle piston and liners they are one of a few companys that make the all steel monotherm piston . They have had great results with the Mahle parts , that would be my second go if i wasn't using Detroit parts hope this helps.
dustinbrock Thanks this. -
12.7 and 14l use federal mogul liner kits and later premium engines use mahle liner kits as genuine , piston and liners don,t wear out rings and gudgeon bushes do- so pull the engine apart and you might find you don,t need to spend as much as you thought

And give serious consideration to changing out the bull gear if going to rebuild a Series 60. Seems like that is an after thought to many folks and they wish they had done it while the engine was opened up.

It's a fairy easy engine to overhaul, you will need a few special tools, some of which you can get by without with a little ingenuity. A manual is a must, PM me and I can help you out with a manual. A genuine basic in-frame kit no longer comes with a lower-end bearing set, but aftermarket ones usually will. If you need to cut the counter-bores, then you have to have someone do that for you, hopefully you have someone near you that can do it on site for you. The bull gear is a good idea at this point, it's a lot more work, but even more when you have to do it later. I also recommend flushing/resealing the oil cooler.
