I've been driving tankers in ND oil fields for past 6 months. Net about 1000 a week after insurance and rent. This is my 2nd trip home in 6 months. Live in a man camp sharing 3 bedroom place with 2 other guys. We share bath/kitchen. Really liked the work (scheduled 12 hr days/5 days but regularly worked 13 or 14 hrs) and I liked the guys I worked with. However, just cant' be away from family that much so....
I'm signing on with JBH Intermodal out of Chicago. I live near Twin Cities. Orientation now scheduled for 4/15 but I need to push that back a week so i can give 2 weeks notice and have time to drive the 11 hours home to move my stuff back. JBH schedule is 11 on and 3 home (every other weekend). Sounds like a piece of cake to me and I like to run pretty hard. I know my income will drop but it's worth it to me to be home more. I've only driven for about a year but over half that is in extreme conditions of North Dakota oil fields (snow, ice and mud-I know how to hang iron!).
Didn't really discuss insurance costs and equipment with recruiter. Any info here would be helpful since it's now weekend and all the JBH people are off. Seems like lots of happy JBH posters here with few exceptions. Wondered also if you can equip truck with satellite tv. I have sleep apnea and use a cpap ( I drove for Schneider for a couple months and used it in the truck).
I assume equipment is in pretty good shape. Looking forward to new challenges.

Jb's equipment is maintained as one of the best in the industry. most of the trucks on intermodal are from new to 3 years old or so. The OTR truck go about 2 years old than look towards being traded. I don't forsee that you couldn't make more than 1000 take home if you run and stay busy. Most intermodal is drop and hooked so there isn't much waiting . maybe at the shippers. But I know that if you stay running your manager will keep you running. as far as the dish they have policies on stuff like that, I never drove OTR or regional in Jb's equipment and its been years since orientation.

All of a sudden another trucking company comes into my focus. Now the debate and here's where you come in. I'm beginning to doubt whether or not I want to spend all my driving time in and out of Chicago and then the upper midwest. I'm looking at Crete. Intermodal runs (according to the recruiters and they're material) 11 days and home 3. Crete gives an option of running 10 to 14 and home 2 or 21 days out and home for 3.5. CPM is about the same, iinsurance cost is less at Crete and eligibility is after 30 days instead of 90 at JBH. No doubt there's enought experienc among you to have some experience or suggestions.

Anyone drive for JBH intermodal or have info on this? I am currently running LTL near Appleton,WI but haven't had a pay raise in almost 2yrs. I would make more with JBH intermodal if the pay is what they say it is. But I wouldn't be home everyday but need to make more money. I really like the company I'm with which makes it a hard decision. Thanks for the info.

I have talked to a few drivers face to face and have they have said the same thing that the money was close or more. Do you know how JB's orientation is?
-
when I was in it it was 4 days. then you get dispatched. if everything goes good I should say, When you go to orientation have any paperwork you can think of with you or able to get it. I was in Chicago when I did mine way back when. I don't think you have to worry about the salary as long as you work for it but few drivers like to sit and not work..

I would compare total pay. JB intermodal doesn't just pay your cpm. There is drop/hook, detention that comes after 1.5 hrs for live load/unload (that you actually collect unless you totally screwed something up. You even get it if you're late in most cases), hazmat pay for placards (not much, but $10 for doing stuff you should be doing anyway is $10), and a few more. I would take a look in writing from both companies everything they pay for. My understanding is Chicago Intermodal is the highest paid for JB intermodal. Also remember, JB pretty much owns BNSF as far as container shipments go. I can't ever remember seeing a Crete container. BTW, I don't work intermodal. I have a couple friends working in various locations. I work a DCS out of SoCal.
