Coils Question

Securement. Not that hard. If two is good, three is better. I hauled 2 23,000 coils @ a time. 4 chains is what I use, I love me.

 

NOTHING will prevent a coil from Telescoping in certain situations.
Years ago a friend was hauling a 42,000 lb. coil shotgun and was cutoff by another trucker (Imagine That) and had to jam on the brakes. The eye of the coil telescoped out knocked the bulkhead off the trailer, cab/sleeper off of the frame, the engine out of the frame and splitting the transmission in half as the engine left the frame.
Those coils are wrapped so tight it's not even funny.

 

I haul 5+ coils everyday I would much rather haul them shotgun. Reason being dumb drivers. couple chains over the top, a trip chain, and 2 through the eye crossed. This week I hauled over 526 TONS of steel, or 1,052,606 pounds depending on how you want to look at it... I guess I have a little exp. Unless the shipper requires suicide. I WILL ALWAYS HAUL SHOTGUN.

 

Coils are easy. I prefer sucide any day of the week over shotgun. But that depends on the shipper and reciever. I will push to haul the way i want it and most of the time i get it that way. My big problem now is I just got back into it a few months ago and the chain rating went down for some reason. Where my chains use to be 10K lbs each now they are only 6700 lbs so i keep chaining short a chain....oh well after all these years of 10k and never a issue i dont forsee an issue safety wish from it maybe DOT....I would say get some heavy duty coil racks I run v style racks that have 2 settings on them and i dont have to cut my wood which works great since i have a few places that require square wood to load so one board covers my coils and deck loads......

 

Question: If you haul the coils shotgun and you stop suddenly, does that mean the coil only tips over if worse come to worse versus suicide??

Worst case seceranio ... Suicide (eye to the side) is going to come through the back of your cab ... Shotgun (eye to the rear) is going to flip left or right off the trailer

 

I have seen shotgun go thru the cab. personal i thing shotgun loads with two or more coils have a better chance of coming through the cab. I mean think about it. you have more force on a hard stop and if you didnt chain right or something breaks it has a straigh shot to slide off the boards and through the cab. At least with sucide it has to jump over the boards and coil racks to start its roll.....

 

Your theory makes no sense whatsoever. I personally have slid a coil due to four wheeler. If it woulda been suicide I wouldnt be here. It snapped three chains and telescoped maybe a foot. "At least with sucide it has to jump over the boards and coil racks to start its roll....." LMAO. Really...


The best way to secure any coil is the following. (single or multiple)

Trip chain in front of the coil. (also nice cause it holds down ur racks.)
3 chains over the top.
2 chains through the eye (CROSSED!!!)
And obviously more chains doesnt hurt.

For all those newbie coil haulers or the ones that drive for companys that have drivers loose their coils and roll their trucks even before they leave a steel mill due to lack of securement and knowledge... *cough* *cough* *cough* Kaplan.

IT ONLY TAKES 12 MPH AND YOU TO SLAM ON YOUR BRAKES TO LOSE THE COIL. Hence why you use a trip chain or block. Suicide is exactly what it means.

Well first i have never NEVER lost a coil cough cough cough kaplan bs. kaplan has one of the safer ratings in the flatbed world for a company its size. and your best way is out dated or missing details since you cant cross chain a sucide anymore. The hole over the top sure go ahead have claims on speed dial. Even when i have to haul shotgun it gets one 3in strap over the top and ran snug. all chains through the eye and tighten down. And yes if it is sucide it has to get enough momentem to roll of flip over the 4x4s and hit the deck. sure it could slide on the deck in the racks some but I will trust a sucide coil any day over a shotgun. I have seen and heard more wrecks with drivers hauling shotgun both roll overs and a few through the bulk and into the bunk than i have sucide.

And yes if a shotgun breaks away there is nothing to even try and keep it from moving foward...simple physics

Heck i know a company down in KY that haul 5 or 6 sucides at a time about 3 miles down the road and dont sling a single chain and do it everyday but if they go to the other shop which is shotgun the chain the crap out of them....

Point is to each their own I like sucide and feel safe with them you might like shotgun. Strap her down and be carefull....

 

You Mr. 1,000,000 lbs are so off base its funny ... Standard set-up 48,000lb coil shotgun ... 4 chains through the eye ... 2 horseshoe .... 2 crossed ... Are you aware that there are mills that don't allow you to place chains on top of coils? ... Trip chains? what did you get that off of page 12 of the CRST how to secure a coil book.

Coils are nothing to play with or take for granted and securement is what makes you feel safe ... I personally have never seen an experienced sterl hauler put 3 chains on top of a coil .... Wow
