I went there once. Asked for a quote on the lumper fee, and told them I was considering unloading it myself. Gave me a door to back in to, had me unloaded in 45 minutes without giving me a quote.![]()

I sat a few hours waiting on the lab samples w/chem tankers.

The guy who brought in the boiler fuel even griped about the 4 hours he had to wait.
Transformer oil from the old Exxon lube rack in Bayonne took up to 6 hours! then you got to the customer and he filled a beaker and sat it under two electrodes and turned up the current until it arced; as long as that voltage was above his standard we were good to go.
Some other Phama companies had long samples but allowed us to visit the subsidized cafeteria...bacon, eggs & coffee for $1.25! -

It stands to reason you're going to sit while they work their own dedicated trucks. Particularly for grocery warehouses, they have stores waiting on those trucks. Besides, you'd better believe if they actually NEED what you've got in the wagon, they will get it. Keep in mind that the majority of things are ordered on a schedule, or based on sales projections, not actual demand (because delays on demand orders make angry customers). I've worked the dock, prior to getting my CDL, and getting our trucks out to our customers was priority, not unloading the inbound freight, with the obvious exception of the demand order which was typically all spoken for before it even got out of the truck.
For example, any of you folks who run the Northeast ever try bringing anything OTHER than turkey to a Wakefern or C&S the week before Thanksgiving? Good luck making your way through the wall of Perdue, Tyson, and Mountaire rigs
