Not sure if it was mentioned, but on many of the highway weigh in motion places you need to have at least 100 feet of spacing between trucks or it'll confuse the machines into thinking it is a longer combination way over gross & redlight both of you. Ticks me off when some super trucker comes flying up my ### as we are about to hit a wim spot

I had a good trainer and Roehl has done a good job getting me to where I'm at, I agree and think its way to much difference in states, etc... None of the scales I went by in Texas were open, however, they looked a lot different then the other scales I was somewhat familiar with. I appreciate all the good advice I received on this thread, it has been helpful. I also think that some of this is just more stuff to learn as I continue driving. I'm not scared to ask questions and actually had a super flatbed driver from Jackson Carriers from Jackson, MS get out of his truck in the rain to spot my back at a TS in Little Rock. It had been a long day and I can back but am really not that fast nor fluid at it yet. I really can't say that I have met a mean driver yet. So thank again to all of you who have left advice! much appreciated.

This is where both common sense and self-discipline come into being.

One night several years ago I was leaving Florida, had to cross a small backwoods scale that was seldom opened. I blew past it,older DOT cop ran me down, said I was supposed to stop. I told him no sign was out,I did not see his car until past the scale. He said yeah, sign was broken, but he had a light bulb turned on in the window of the little shack they used, and that meant to come in and be checked.I asked him how was I supposed to know that, he just said that was my problem. Took me back , weighed me, I was empty. He was not too happy.

While visiting this subject, how do you know if the coop is open? on I80 in IL there are signs telling the cars to stay left if traffic is heavy, sometimes when it isn't.

If the lights are flashing, yellow warning lights, the scale is probably open.

PA weighs at the 56 mile marker on I80, eastbound is a full coop, westbound is an inspection area where you may or may not be weighed. They also weigh at several rest areas around the state on the Interstates, these are set up to use flashing lights above the signs when they are checking.

In MN the scale up on 90 east of Worthington is also set up with the flashing lights.

Some scales use a sign that when folded open reads open or scale open and when folded shut reads closed.

A scale in many states that is mostly closed will often have a closed banner applied to it, IL is good at doing that as well.

Scales closed for maintenance are said to be "Out of the ground." Sometimes, the scale literally is out of the ground.

I'm going to start a federal sub-agency of the FMCSA that regulates scales.

from oklahoma westward, i've never been asked for anything other than permits. and all we run is west. with an occasional eastern trip.

NOW, i did get asked for my logs once in utah. and probably becuase i rolled across 3 times in 48 hours is my guess. that was the kanab utah scale.

so heres a question for you guys.

the sign says OPEN WHEN FLASHING. so why do you all roll through????
none of you ever roll through at night. but EVERYONE of you roll through during the day.

    mje Thanks this.
