I personally prefer suicide. I put (6) 5/16 chains through the eye and throw (2) of my 4" straps over the top and hook into my J hooks. I feel safe with the way I secure and I am more than covering my rating.

If I understand your post, you only put 4 chains on a 48K coil? -
If I'm loading suicide, I put 5-6 5/16 chains through the hole. And start tarping. Haven't lost one, have snapped a chain when I had 6 on it and I put another on and took off again. Coil hauling is not to be taken lightly. But done right, it's easy to do.

Technically only 24,000 pounds need to be secured. 6600 wll x 4=26,400.Clasix1055 Thanks this.

True, securements need be only 50 percent of the load weight. then you have to look at what the tie down is. If a chain is "horseshoed" then its WWL is cut to half. 6600 is now 3300.
The other thing people over look is the formula used to determine the "G" force load restraint. The reason you have 1 more chain pulling back on a suicide coil, or block and trip on shotguns. -
Sorry for not being thorough to my reply. I haul suicide over 90% of the time so I don't cut my WLL any. I have (4) chains through the middle and (1) pulling towards the front with (1) pulling towards the back. Then (2) 4" straps over the top tying to my J hooks. In my opinion this is the best way to secure a suicide coil. The Challenger and Clasix1055 Thank this.

Soooo, what's the deal with everyone putting straps/chains over the top of these coils? Are ya trying to "mushroom" them or what?
Sent from your iPhone via my Galaxy Nexus!carrkool Thanks this. -
Thats only true if you have one side horseshoe .... When you have both sides done you have equal force pulling in oppsite directions which makes the horseshoe legal and the chains crossed through the eye pulling in opposite directions....I do it everyday and have yet to be ticketed

On a shotgun loaded coil, it is required to meet FMCSA load securement. I have been told Ohio has been pushing a single strap over the top of suicide coils lately. -
A horseshoed chain or any tie down, when anchored to the same side of the trailer is only half the WWL, does not matter how many, or the locations.
