In School, the first day, or two (once we got in the truck) all we did was back up in a straight line. Well some of us did. Others, not so straight.. hehehehe

I was in the same situation having a good job but physically demanding so I took the risk. We have always save enough money to cover all our expenses for 4 months in case of an emergency and believe me, having my wife in nursing school and being the only one working is a risk but went to a local community college for two months and was blessed by getting a job even before getting my license.
Now at $20/hr and 60hrs a week I make a bit over double of what I was making before.

The worse thing about this type of course is that even if you do pass and get your license nobody is going to hire you. The reason is that nowadays its the insurance companies that dictate the rules to these companies hiring. This is how these companies are able to hire new drivers with no experience. The insurance companies tell them that provided a driver attends an accredited school and completes a minimum amount of training time hours (which is usually around 160-170 hours) then they will be willing to insure them to drive.

Therefore if you try to create your own shortcut or think you can beat the system you are just wasting your time and money. Even if you were to get hired on with an owner operator they wouldn't be able to insure you and you wouldn't be able to drive. There are some insurance companies that make exceptions but their cost is astronomical and usually nobody would want to pay such a high premium just to have a new driver.

Do yourselves a huge favor and go about it the right way the first time. You are going to beat the system or invent some new way of obtaining a CDL.

I was in the same boat as you. The walls in my office were closing in and I had enough. Actually, had vacation to take one week of school and get paid for it. I would highly recommend to go to a school. My trainer has 41 years experience and has taught me so much. I still have one more week of school before I take my test and I am getting close to being ready, but still nervous.
That being said, right now I am glad I am getting my CDL. May change in a year, we will see.

joeT .... hey joe, i am not one who says i told you so, but i was one of the biggest people yelling at you that day to NOT go there and NOT be apart of hooter woman and her worthless husband .... we experienced drivers on here are not here to make you and other new drivers feel unapreciated or unwanted... we are here for you, the new guys, you guys are the future of trucking and if we can help ease the transition from civilian life to trucking life, we will help in any way possible .. like i said , you and all new guys are the future, you are what will keep the shelves stocked and the country moving when we older experienced guys are too old to see more than 5 feet in front of the truck and cant remember where it is we are going when we get 200 miles from our pickup .. when it is time for us to do that R word, it is up to you and the other new guys to keep it trucking ....

we dont believe in short cuts, we didnt have them when we started, but when we started there was no internet, there was no cell phones, no GPS and certainly no truckers report website to help us out ... so we advise and give opinions on our own experiences so the new guys such as yourself wont have to fight dig scratch and claw to get what you need .....

i am glad you found out how rough it really is and how it is not rocket science as you put it to me that day ... i am glad you come to your sences and that you got away from hooterville and her mal adjusted messed up husband and their BS so called business ... they are nothing but crooked people who practically steal money from people who want to take the easy way out ... i wrote to many trucking companies telling them about hooters and her misfit husband and sent them links to their youtube channel so they can witness first hand what they do so when students say they got a CDL from them, they dont get accepted .....

but i am glad you come to your senses ... i do hope you go through a real trucking school and get out on the road soon ... if i run into you on the road, i will buy you a cup ... if you ever brave the northeast, that is where i run in my barr-nunn truck....

I have 25+ yrs in I still am learning. If you don't take advice then why ask for it. I was taught by an owner op. he yelled so loud long and often he would go hoarse. I remember every thing he taught me. I spent 45 days with him on the doghouse screaming at me then another 6 mo. Following him or one of his sons

I am just astounded that guys pay to learn to drive trucks. I have ALWAYS payed my guys to learn for 2 days with me in the passenger seat. And this is in logging trucks with pups, tractors with log trailers with log loaders. Highway trucking is the easiest of any driving out there. Maybe I should start a truck driving school, so the uninformed can pay me!

I agree with Sharp on that note, with you having a family to support and having a job that pays good tells me that it would be extremely risky for you to just up and switch careers, as far the route you took, I've seen a certain company on YouTube that has trucks to rent for 250 bucks and the owner parades his wife in the videos with her breasts popping out obviously to attract attention to the videos....very shady if you ask me....but not bad to look at lol
