Hi guys,
we ended up buying the 06 Freightliner with the 60 series Detroit 14L. Haven't pulled a load with it, just drove it home. Runs good and strong no problems. There seems to be more noise than there should be, like turbo roaring through the mufflers. Any way to cut down the noise? Also, I cranked it in the yard and the check engine light came on. Motor sounded great for a few seconds, then the light went off and the roar was back. Any opinions on what causes the noise and what to do to reduce the noise?
One other question; on the drivers side of the engine is what I think is the ECM. It's a thin square box with an electrical plug on each end. It has a stud with a nut on each corner. Is this the ECM? We're going to send it off for a tune and want to be sure it's the right part.
Thanks again for all the advice and opinions before we bought the truck. It sure helped.

Freightliners are loud, get used to it. Roaring nose? Sound's normal, the VGT turbo has a nice personality. The ECM is located on the drivers side of the engine near the starter. You may also consider purchasing a USED ECM on ebay or else where and keeping your current ECM in case something goes wrong with the new one, you will still be able to drive the truck.
YOu should get in touch with rebel127, he can do all the tuning you need on this forum. Good luck. -
the check engine light you are getting should be the EGR system. I had a similar problem with my 06 14L. It was the delta pressure sensor and then the VPOD (variable pressure output device/turbo controller). I changed the sensor and the VPOD. No problems since. If that repair hasn't been done on that truck before it will be. As for the sound. I added 2 gallons of lucas to the engine and 2 gallons to the transmission. Motor and trans operate smoother and quieter. turbo wine can be caused by the vpod. get it checked. turbo for that motor is $2875 part only. Experience from my other 06.

Will Lucas mix with synthetic gear oil with out any side affects?

Thanks for the answer. The light only comes on when the truck is first started (and not every time) and goes off when the truck is revved up. Good point about the lucas, will do that.

I had a cel when cranking engine and no start tried again cel came on then engine started got the flash codes and said crank sensor out of wack so i replaced it and cam sensor , after that no more trouble with this.

Those new trucks are so loud the truck stops now sound like you're on the deck of an aircraft carrier.
