I know this will get a bunch of eyes... But I'm looking for a few good drivers to help on a thread I started to help give a little guidance on a thread I started on the... ??? from new drivers forum... I just spent 4 days in an orientation program... and saw some of the remnants of destruction left by misinformation... I listened and talked to other drivers which led me to want to start something here for newer drivers.... I want a few drivers to give their opinions and perspective ... I'm approaching this from the human perspective of the damage to relationships that can be left behind in this business, and how to find a job in this industry that will give you a decent paycheck and have a strong family interaction... there's a lot of you guys out there who have lived through and understand what you can lose... wouldn't you hope that maybe you could help another man or woman driver not have to make the same mistakes... so they won't hurt or lose their loved ones like some of us may have.... because there wasn't somebody like us... to help us.
It's bad enough that the family unit is already an endangered species.... Ya know what... as I referenced... check out the million miler post and read a recent one from a "Dying Breed"... we all are a dying breed if you've been around... Please treat this as I wanted it to be.... this is what we leave behind us... our legacy... and maybe a few of them will pass the good advice along to the next generation of driver... We've all had a multitude of experiences... this isn't about companies per se... I don't want it to be about companies... I want this to be about the human element... the good and bad about choices that you now see in hindsight... in some way affected your family in a positive or negative way... whether you felt you had no choice and how you'd do it now... and what you think the future is negative and positive.... let's try to steer NOW... not a truck but the young ones who might have a chance to have some control in steering an industry that we loved or hated and became a victim of.

I know there's a bunch of you guys and ladies out there who all have the choices they made different than mine.... I believe my theories and judgements are sound... but I have no doubt that there are lots more that are just as justified as mine... we all just come from different angles.

Ya know... the way the industry has gone... the powers that be have done their best to keep us splintered so we couldn't come together. Does that mean that all is lost... NO... This is our opportunity to leave the little brothers and sisters... our sons and daughters with information that will empower them... to cause the strong powers that have worked hard to break us to have to negotiate fairly... with those who follow.
They're trying to replace the driver with technology... our choices... our control... our judgement calls.... the scary thing is I was seeing technology that is getting too close... At the present rate of technology.... God I hate to say this... but I can see it happening within the next generation... and anybody who says that's not possible.... I'm sorry but you are not informed... or you just choose to ignore it. Anyway... I think you get the idea of where I'm coming from... Anybody that feels that they have something positive and empowering to share with those coming up behind us.... Please... grab a piece of chalk and step up to the board... and let's pay it forward....

I was empowered here by two things... spending the last 4 days in a.... God I hate to say this... JB orientation for a local grocery job in NE... HELLO... I know what I said 20 years ago.... that's another reason... but my second point was... and I don't know if it was original from the poster... and he can defend that here if he wants... but it was original from some truckdriver... talkin' about how things had changed... Let's make it positive... Thank You to all you drivers out there for your indulgence... Drivers... I thank you for your sacrifices and service to the health and welfare of me and my fellow citizens...
"If you were my son or daughter"

The thing is drivers young and old don't have a chance to control anything . Well , they could but they choose not to . When requests for comments are made for pending regulations very few drivers say anything while "safety organizations " rally thousands of supporters to push regulations through .
Drivers violate HOS either because they are afraid of dispatch or they just want more miles for more money . These violations are discovered in an audit after a fatal accident and all drivers pay the consequences .
The industry is being degraded and I don't see any chance of improvement or any encouraging words .

I'll say here what I've told my buddies for awhile now... If we could somehow get ALL drivers and carriers to refuse to deliver to Washington DC ONLY for about 7 - 10 days, I bet changes would come around real quick. At the very least someone would be paying a lot of attention. But it wont work unless enough drivers and companies band together... the recent news stories on here about Warner Robbins or whatever that town was called proved that drivers standing together can make a difference. But good luck ever getting that to happen...

Well I would tell new drivers to not run otr if they have a family maby regional if you have to but as soon as you have the experience go dedicated or local . I ended up at jb because of all the dedicated accounts they have to chose from and it has worked out well . Werner swift and schneider all have dedicated and local jobs find out which of those companies has dedicated or local in your area so that when you get your training and some experience you can put in for that job buy your home and start having a somewhat normal home life again .

I found the jb orientation interesting about a third of the drivers were guys who had done a year at other training companies and they did not know how to fill out paper logs they never had them before then there were a bunch of guys like me who had said in the past we would never work for a mega carrier but ended up there anyways now I wish I had come to work here sooner .

No organization... you got it right Captain... one thing I learned this week... why do we have CSA...? MADD... they didn't stop going after what they felt was needed through their representatives... so it shows some sign of organization and perseverance can create change.
Of course there are a lot of factors that play into it... but it's possible. Also too I said sometime back with fuel costs that if drivers just started piling their rigs into DC... shut her down get out lock it up and walk... bumper to bumper totally surrounding the capitol and congress... I'll bet we'd get their undivided attention...

This is a joke, isn't it? Where is the "You are responsible for your own decisions" attitude? I do not blame anyone, private or government for problems that I created myself. Now, you may have problems created by natural disaster, unexpected disease or injury, or lack of opportunity, that is different as there isn't anything you can do for that. But, to blame companies, organizations and government is ludicrus. The problem was created when an individual did not do proper research and then ended up making a bad decision from that bad information.
    That is my opinion.

I agree with muledriver a driver with a family SHOULD NOT do otr I have watchedFor 5 years as my husband has been jerked around with low miles no miles Rude dispatchers. And it has really taken a toll on our marriage and our kids.As a wife of a trucker I can tell you that it is hard and I understand that its no Picnic for you out there on the road four wheels who cut you off and think youCan stop on a dime . Dispatchers who think you can drive 300 miles in two hours thruMorning traffic in Dallas ha ha right. But on the flip side your partner at home Has to work a 40 hour a week job do the bill paying groc shopping lawn mowing New drivers need to be told its not just a lifestyle for them. They need to have a real Truthful talk with their familys before they go otr

For decades, millions of OTR drivers have run the roads, raised families, celebrated 30 and more year wedding anniversaries and provided enough and often more than enough that their wives did not "have" to work. Many still do. Does it take sacrifice? Yes, it does, but you chose your sacrifices, not someone else.

I just spent 15 months unemployed because I was not going over the road... not even regional but that is my choice, along with my wife's consideration... i had a couple of companies hounding me... it was getting very close to necessary.. but things changed and I was able to get what I sort of wanted... I know that doesn't work for everybody... and we had money put away... plus unemployment.
