The easiest way to understand why truckers stay in the middle lane is quite simple. Hook up a long trailer to a vehicle and try to drive through an area with lots of lanes. You must keep an eye on the lanes next to you on both sides. The most accident prone time is when you change lanes.
Many times when a move is made to another lane, someone will try to pass as you do this. Alot of companies believe it is safer for their drivers to stay in the middle lane.
After you try the experiment, let us know what you think of trying to change lanes all of the time. Best of luck.
why are trucks driving in the middle lane(s)?

Well, since this Squid is allegedly a law enforcement officer (sounds like the law of temper tantrums), then he/she can enlighten us as to his/her name, position, badge number, precinct/state that he/she is working out of. I would love to see this "law enforcement" officer's superiors take a look at that reply and see what kind of - hell that person is going to get.
This person seems to think that truckers have been acting this was for 25 years. Well, ma'am or madam, I was driving 24 years ago, the scenario on the roads was MUCH different. People used to RESPECT a heavy truck coming at them, and would defer to them. Nowadays, nobody cares. They only care when their stupid acts of driving lunacy gets them killed or maimed because they were in such a ###### big hurry, they couldn't wait a tenth of a second for the truck to clear out of their way, or do whatever it needed to do.
The only thing you are asking for with that kind of attitude is an invitation wtih death - cause' if you're going to intentionally cut off truckers, sooner or later, it's going to come back to bite you and you will have NO-ONE to blame but your own self. -
A meter maid is considered law enforcement. If he is a janitor, he could loosely say he is law enforcement. He may even be a rent a cop.
I sincerely doubt any professional law enforcement officer would have such an attitude. -

Basically, whether or not you are aware of it, it was YOU who drew first blood here. -
Nah. He ain't no cop. Just another troll. Another person with a chip on his shoulder against one of the hardest working groups of people in America. You're going to take it out on an entire sector of people based on what people said were good reasons for us staying in the middle lane? How arrogant and ignorant can you get? You won't stop short for a trucker making turn? Then you're going to find yourself facing a trucker who can't complete that turn and will likely hold up traffic. And he'll be darned if he's going to back up. Remember. WWJD? Would He have a "Me first" attitude and say "I'm done being considerate."?
-
To me these statements you have made prove that your not an officer. Your most likely just some kid trolling.
P.S. You missed a spot on the floor. -
I think drivers take things for granted and don't necessarily think from the perspective of a 4-wheeler - certainly in this situation.
A truck staying in the slow lane on an at least 3-lane road (well, 6 lane road with 3 lanes going either direction), is going to have to slow down for all the traffic "merging" in.
Living and driving in a big city, I see MOST 4-wheelers idea of merging is to simply cut into traffic at whatever point they please, regardless of the potential consequences.
Regardless, said truck slows down. Loaded at 40 tons, it takes forever to get back up to speed, and at least here, very few opportunities are to be had to get back into the center lane - unless you want to cut other vehicles off like they do to you all day long.
The idea of getting into the slow land and back into the center lane and back into the slow lane ....etc etc etc etc.....is not only going to be mostly undoable, it's also DANGEROUS. Lane changes in moderate or heavy traffic is hardly the safest thing to be doing multiple times. To sit in that slow lane is a ridiculous idea, unless you are getting off at the next exit. You are going to have car after car after car come speeding past you, JAM their car into the space between you and the vehicle in front of you, and then SLAM on their brakes to keep from running INTO that vehicle.
I have no qualms driving in the middle lane - but then again, there's always the high speed lane and I tend to stay at the same speed as "prevailing" traffic. -
that you came back to look at all the spit being thrown in your face after a 6 month hiatus. What took ya so long?..........have you been stuck in the right lane?
-
hey, i got one today. i timed it just right so the trucker wouldn't have to slam on his breaks, but he did have to drop down about 15 miles an hour .............i thought 'hey, if he's in that big of a hurry to get there, he should have left 5 minutes earlier'
let's see what tonight brings
