Gator, Keep your eye on the Net Fuel cost. I know you are a numbers guy, so looking at your numbers monthly and quarterly. I always get mad when I realize that I cannot run a load with just the fuel surcharge. If you focus on keeping your fuel cost to the fuel surcharge you will notice a big increase in your revenue. $100-350 a week solo, double if you are teaming/training.

I can't believe there is even a discussion about which method is better. There is no doubt that going slower to gain better fuel economy is better. You can't control your schedule. That is a crap shoot that is partially dictated by your FM and where freight needs are in the freight lines. But fuel economy is 100% within your control.
I can't see how arriving at my destination a few hours earlier because I chose to drove 65 mph is worth the loss of $$$ due to increased fuel costs. It seems to be a no brainer for me. -
Well, Although slowing down is important, so is increasing your movement of freight. My procedure is as follows:
1. receive the load info.
2. Call shipper, If I can load early I move at 60 or 62 to the shipper to get loaded early. Empty trailer is not that much of a liability.
3. Call Receiver. If they will accept an early delivery, then work toward an early delivery with a good speed. I usually go 59-62 and shoot for 7.2 to 7.8 MPG. If I cannot deliver on time, I will go into total fuel saving mode.jomar68 Thanks this. -
Hey eagle. I agree my net last year was .09. Not bad but i want better
I do the same as far as calling ahead. I cannot believe how few guys are proactive like this. Sure i get a lot of nos but often i get the ok -
Well it has been a few days since slowing down. My onbosrd has me at 7.94. It will be good when settlement comes and i can do the math. Last week i jumped to 7.64 and held 60.
Still managed to be 8 hours eRly at 50 on a load that could not be early. still my 10 hr will be done slowing down on this load has not messed up moving freight
Another thing came up. I could have been early enough to fl to drop at yar. I called fm he told me to get out of team mode. I told him i just wanted to get the cheap fl load away asap. He told me to trust him and be an instructor. so i pulled in 16 hrs early for delivery. So i went home a few hrs spent night in my own bed. Student drove to delivery next day it wad thursday. Next load was friday so we went to ts spent a few hrs backing and pretrip. I went home for dinner again. But the trust the fm was the 1.17 on the line haul i got on a tropicana load. -
Well the numbers are in on week one. 7.7 net fuel .05. It would have been better but a day on the pad does burn a bit of fuel on no miles. This week we are aprox 8.5.
-
Try keeping your boost pressure under 10 psi as much as possible. You aren't staying in cruise bumpin' up 'n down little hills are you?
-
No i feather the hills and no little throttle if any at the top let momentum carry me over and let gravity (while in gear) get me down. I do well on hills unless it is us 65.
-
Cool. So unless you're in a hard pull, keeping the boost at 10 or less will save a lot of fuel. You can back out of it or drop off of cruise to peg it there - you end up downshifting a lot more, but it really drops the fuel consumption.
-
Well the numbers are partially in last week i hit 8.11. I had a litle help with a 600 mile run from atlanta to fl that was only 9700 pounds but still i have tnt guy trying to leave the mpg on he dash higher than when he took over. Im doing the ame with him. And even though we drove slow we made 90 36 hours early and dropped it and ran to the boarder for a nice load of melons
silenteagle Thanks this.
