@8yrs ago, I was stuck in Houston over a holiday with another one of our O/O's.
She complained of lower MPG's adn a general feeling of it not being right.
Found an intermittent injector issue, and the overhead was way off.
With nothing better to do, I pulled the covers, rebuilt the jakes, an found @5 pushrods that were not straight. Couldn't believe they were not straight in the box, they said they just install them etc. In my thinking, if it isn't straight to start with, it will only deflect more when it has the pressure of the valves on it.
Got new pushrods from Cummins, eventually after going through @20 and finding 5 straight ones!
Ran the overhead with the new pushrods with a dial indicator, and it ran excellent afterwards. Better MPG and more power both for pulling and engine braking.
Worth making sure the basics are covered first IMHO.
