There is a federal program called WIA which stands for the Workforce Investment Act. Please google and yahoo search "Workforce Investment Act". It is a federal funding program that provides funding for training so that unemployed workers can get a job. I found out about it through the 'Workforce Center'. Google and yahoo if there is a workforce center in your state. What happened where I am in St. Paul Minnesota is that I have to attend a class every weekday form 9am to 12pm for two weeks on resume wrighting and how to get a job. It is very simplistic (boring), but at the end I can apply for a federal grant to go to trucking school. The two week class is a screening out process. They are not just going to give away money. They are going to make sure you show up on time every day, which is the most important thing to do: always be on time and early. They also want to see a good effort, paying attention, and that you do any homework they give you well.
If where you live does have a WIA program, Please get your permit before you begin class or at least before beginning any actual truck training program (including before you start any classroom portion). You will need to take a general knowledge test, air breaks test, and combination vehicle test in order to get your permit. Search for commercial driver's license books at your local library. It really takes a book to begin to explain the truck if you have little experience in the field, otherwise concepts like the truck 'airbreaks tests' are very confusing. It involves statements like "to test the trailer breaks, engage the trailer breaks, release the tractor breaks, and do a tug" and "to test for air loss, put the manual truck in first gear on level ground, turn off the truck, but turn the key to supply power to the truck, place your foot on the pedal for one minute, and make sure that the truck doesn't loose more than four pounds of pressure within that minute." It sounds rediculous and is impossible to picture until you know certain parts of the truck on the dashboard, at least it was for me and took much studying. Also google/yahoo search the keywords 'cdl A general knowledge test', 'cdl A air breaks test', and 'cdl A combination test'. There are many great sites out there that will quizz you, and it is very similar to what will happen when you take the three computer multiple choice tests at your dmv to get your permit. Also, start working on your pre-trip right away. That is another mistake I made. The pre-trip is where you name certain parts of the truck and identify if they are in working order. You have to pass a pre-trip test in order to get your license. There are over 108 truck parts you will need to know by name. My very best advice is to go to youtube.com and search for 'CDL A pre trip' or 'class A pretrip'. Beging by watching those. I used : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhuHJcg9vMs&feature=related
and http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=N08-FubqGow
. Lastly, have the money saved up to re-test and a re-test date scheduled for if you fail the test. I failed it twice. I big problem is- if you fail and your dmv testing site is booked or your school trucks are booked, you may have to wait weeks or months to re-test which will cost you much of your skills and you may fail again. You want a second test booked one week after the first, so that if you make a mistake, you're ready to go test the next week. Very lastly I strongle recommend taking a weekday course, rather than a prolonged weekend course. Weekend courses are much worse because the brain and body learn and works better with daily repetion as opposed to taking five days off in between. It takes most people a couple months to get their license, It took me a year. Don't be like me, use the advice I never had.Last edited: Mar 28, 2013

Quite a few of you have been commenting on the lack of answers to certain questions. I have read the whole thread and I understand your concerns. The OP has stated he was in the military and got out to see his child born therefore that is as far as he evidently feels the info should be taken. He has said his problem was no verifiable employment and no tax returns due to not knowing how to file. Several have suggested a CPA or tax service but these cost money which he likely does not have(been there myself),this causes a snowball effect with the tax returns. Cut the guy some slack on the info(which he could view as personal or companies may not be concerned with) and give him good advice. At least he's trying unlike a vast majority of his age mates.
My advice listen to the people who have told you to try local "workforce" or social service programs as well as talk to VA for assistance. -
I was in the same position. I downloaded all the IRS forms for 3 years and filled them out and filed. There is no amount too low to file tax on. The whole process took me 2 days and I was instantly hired.

This only happens to people who are foolish and do no research at all. With some effort this scenario is completely avoidable.jdrentzjr Thanks this.
