Dang! Well I had a similiar issue after an over head was done and ended up replacing all 6 injectors after 3 went out on me after the overhead. I have an 02 freightliner with the 12.7 detroit. I would try a good fuel injector cleaner like Power Service first.

Run it from a different container of fuel and you'll know if its the engine or the tanks it's possible something is wrong with the head it has happened to me before with freightliner You have to go one step at a time.

yep im also going to say injector seals are leaking in a hard pull.I think that detroit had a update kit that were little washers to put on the end of the injectors. Its been several years since i worked on one though and memory is fading.

Do what everyone else is saying run from clean full supply. however I would take the returns off run them to clean bucket and do not add oil at first. this way you can see what the return fuel looks like. if it keeps coming out black than you have a motor issue. note it may come black for a few minutes but should clean up some. also add some used motor oil to your takes every month. it helps lube the injectors since this new want to be diesel lacks lube that older motors need. lucas injector cleaner at services. we fill our filters 3/4 of the way with lucas than top of with fuel. add the rest of the gallon to the tanks....good luck

just a thought: i do not dump anything in my filters.what ever is dumped in the filter goes to the injector. I would wash filter housing before removing filter then remove filter, replace with new filter and then use pump to fill filter. If you look at the holes on the end of your injectors you will understand why.

What, you mean I'm not the only one! After whining about my fuel mileage someone said it was real important on detroits to do the overhead regular. I had the truck a couple years and hadn't done one, so I did and one injector took a dump before I got two blocks from the shop. A couple months later three more went out on the highway. I thought it was broke so I fixed it, won't make that mistake again.
Anyway before that the filter in my Davco always had a black film on it. After replacing all the injectors it went away. I even left the truck parked for six or eight months, and it was still clean after a few weeks back on the road, putting to rest the algae theory.

I have never had an issue. I also have tank with a filter on it that I run the lucas through than the fuel. also if you fill it through the middle it still filters since the middle is the inlet and the sides are the outlets.

I only run the overhead when it needs it IE lose of power mpg and so on and I cant find another reason other than overhead. that's on all my 12.7 my truck I have 3 million and counting on orginal block second head only because I messed up on last inframe snapped a bolt in the exhause manifold and started drilling it out. some how the drill mount shifted and I did not catch it and off set the hole....so had to replace the head....

i just had the overhead run on my 60 series for no other reason than it hadn't been done in a long time and the truck seems to run smoother than before the overhead. no issues before or after
i have had black fuel in my fuel filters a while back, some bio klean and a few filter changes and some fresh fuel seemed to get rid of it. but the truck had pretty old fuel in it truck had not been used in a while. i think my fuel issue was different than yours though. -
The inside of your fuel lines could be breaking down. I had the same problem on my 95 FLD. Changed all the fuel lines and ran through a few tanks of fuel, back to normal.
