So i am very interested in learning how to shift without the clutch i just turned 20 and got my CDL-A when i was 19 so finding someone willing to take the risk of destroying there transmission to teach me is not happening so i need pointers so when im in a rig by myself i can kinda sorta experiment i know it depends on the type of engine ect. but i need tips on how its done
Need tips from the old timers

Ok how to explain this with out being there. first while you learn leave the jakes off.....very important so that you don't break a tooth. First to move the shifter out of gear you have to do the this If your giving it fuel you have to ease off it. if your off the fuel you have to ease into it. just enough to take the pressure off the tranny gears. than shift as if you had the clutch. so if your upsifting let RPMs come down to where you need to be to go into gear. DONT FORCE IT IN THOUGH. just take 2 fingers and feel the hole. I am sure you have grinded gears learning so far so you know what you are feeling for in the grind. If you are down shifting once you put it in N give her alittle fuel to get the rpms where they need to be and same thing 2 fingers ease it in. I say to fingers why you learn so that you can feel the tranny very well and can understand what is going on in it. Just be easy with it. take your time and DONT FORCE IT. than learn to find where your jakes turn on and off with the fuel pedal...WHAT KINDA TRUCK ARE YOU LEARNING IN? you need to learn this to move on to jake shifting jake shifting is the same thing just FASTER

slow is smooth and smooth is fast.
cetanediesel Thanks this. -
You are going to come to a stop many times Grass Hopper. Feel the trans, feel the motor. It's all harmony. Ever get it caught in your zipper? You don't do it twice.

Hey everyone will say different from me but this is a good rule to start the process, ok ?
nice and easy on accelerator (always), this isn't your gas vehicle,
tach to 1500 rpm,...slide out of gear(and foot off accelerator)....let fall around 1300 rpm, and try to slide it in gear with foot ready to feather accelerator.
THE last gear I have to do differently, previous advise is for flat land, no hills, or bad wind the HEAVIER your load the faster the SMOOTH shift is needed.
blah blah advise... I was taught tach 1800 shift out and shift in at 1500 that alone is almost half mile per gallon diff. with many red lights. -
The clutch is there for a reason other than a foot rest!

Yeah, to stop and start...
In all truth, there's a time and a pace for both, learn both, and learn when to use each.
And then go tackle a 5x4.cetanediesel Thanks this. -
Not something that can be book taught. Gotta have the rhythm. It helps to know what the inside of a transmission looks like and how gear ratios are different. That's basic knowledge you might find on Youtube nowadays in case you are lacking.
