Hello to all,
I've been reading this forum for about a year now. I have used the great information posted here to help me make my decisions in starting my new career. I just finished driving school and am going to orientation with Con-Way Truckload in Joplin, MO next week. I am excited and nervous(what the heck have I gotten myself into?) I drove a concrete truck for a couple of years as a 21-22 year old, but have never driven OTR. I hope this will be fun, it will be interesting at least!

I got my first truck driving job when I was 34 years old. I drove for Schneider National for one year. I quit and went back to my old job. I got the itch to go back out and hit the road a few years later and did it for 18 months. Now I'm 44 and I'm going to do it again.
The most important piece of advice I can give is be safe. Get out and look if you can't see what you are backing into. Your truck can't do any damage if it is not moving. I only have 2-1/2 years experience so take that for what its worth.
The best part for me is having an office with a window where the scenery is constantly changing.
Good luck and have fun! -
I changed careers at 40 years old and it was the best move I've ever made in my life. I wish I would have done this as a young man like I intended to but better late than never.
This is a job, and it's not for the faint of heart OR the unmotivated. Chances are you won't have someone sitting over you telling you to get up and move that freight or making sure your on time. But rest assured that either of those don't happen and you will hear about it. I've found that communicating with everyone in the chain during a load eliminates 99 percent of the trouble with this gig.
I enjoyed OTR but sure am thankful I found a good day job. Enjoy your time my friend, good luck!dedwarmo Thanks this. -
Thank you for the insite. Be safe.
