I used to for SRT back in 2011. After I left, I received a letter from a collection agency saying that I owed SRT $1000 for going out of route miles that were not authorized by my dispatcher. I had put in my two weeks notice and was at home on home time and they were trying to call me in to take a load. I had already scheduled orientation with the company I was going to. So I just returned the truck back to Texarkana terminal and came home to make my orientation for the other company. I guess SRT is saying that I violated their equipment utilization policy. Any advise out there.

So during your final two weeks you were at home in Atlanta and they tried to call you to haul a load? You drove the truck from Atlanta back to Texarkana empty to turn it in?
-
Give them a 100 dollars a month or a week until you paid it off. Diesel does cost money sir and I'm sure it was in the fine print of your contract that you signed.
-
if you gave them 2 weeks notice, then returned the truck i wouldn't worry about it,they got there stuff back.
-
Not if he drove it back empty. Yeah, you owe them $1000. If you deadheaded from Atlanta to Texarkana, without permission, you are in the wrong.
Dinomite and bigkev1115 Thank this. -
I'm not sure I understand. You were in your two week notice period so you were still working for SRT, then you quit before your 2 weeks notice expired? It's a bad pill to swallow but I think it's yours to take. Most companies don't want a notice. They don't want drivers out there trashing their equipment and their name. They just want them to route them to a terminal and turn in their equipment ASAP and quit if they're going to quit. I know I would if I was a carrier employer.

Well, the key word was "unauthorized". You drove a truck 660 miles from Atlanta to Texarkana. SRT is charging you 1.52 a mile for bringing that truck back to Texarkana. I understand that you were on home time and probably cleaning out your truck. You would ve been better off to tell your dispatcher to route you through Texarkana to turn truck in versus taking matters in your own hand and deadheading or bobtailing back to Texarkana.
Dinomite Thanks this. -
ain;t even fine print with srt.....they tell you upfront about the charge but they are also the first company i ever quit that worked me up until the last minute of my notice .....got me back through yard and had me run between dallas and texarkana until time was up and the charge for recovering equipment or unauthorized use i think is up to 1.75 now if i recall right they even post a notice in the break room in texarkana
no way can you plead ignoranceskootertrashr6 Thanks this. -
Yea if you dh back to the term on their fuel you owe the money. These OTR company's short you miles every month and then they stick it to you if you drive their equipt back mty. But if they told you that was the deal up front wadda gonna do.
Another reason to not work for anyone that is out of state.
I am also curious why a collection agency is trying to get the money now? Did the company already try to collect and you told them to pound sand? Once the debt is sold to a collection agency SRT already took a payment. So they already black marked your credit. All paying now would do is show the debt is payed but the damage is done. Call the agency up and offer a settlement. -
I agree, they point it out up front, and the employee handbook even has the amount per mile listed in there. When I turned in my 2 week notice they even routed me by my house to unload what I needed to and kept me running until my notice was up and routed me to Texarkana to turn it in. They are still calling me to see if I would be interested in returning. The OP did the right thing by returning the equipment to Texarkana, but was 100% in the wrong by deadheading there without authorization to do so, therefore he owes them money for the fuel/miles.
