Hi fellow Drivers. last tuesday coming from one of my runs from the east coast of florida, i took one of my back wood roads and for years i saw dozens of deer road kill on the road. My only deer encounter was years ago in a box truck at 3 pm and that deer just ran infront of me in three jumps and was gone. Last tuesday night, i was going 55 mph and had low beam lights. At about 40 feet infront of me, i saw the brown deer entering the highway and my next course of action was to pull to the left, no cars coming at that time, the deer just continue towards the front of my rig and when i knew that deer -truck impact was inminent, i grab with both hands the wheel and brace for impact, the loud impact sound was of hard steel and breaking bones. Not of broken fibergalss and broken pieces of the front grill. I dint feel that i ran over it after impact nor dint see where it went, since this back road is two lane highway with florida swamp besides it where you cant stop on the side of the soft shoulder, all i could do is continue, my fear was damage to the transmission cooler or the radiator leak. Drove for 15 miles until i found a safe spot to park and assessed the front damage, thanks to that move in a slit second of pulling to the left, that move made the impact with the deer on the lower part of the Freightliner Century lower bumper. Only a round bent about one inch of the front transmission cooler radiator. If it would'off been on the side of the bumper, there could've been damage to both the cooler and the radiator. When i went to Atlanta and bought this truck from Schneider National, i noticed a mini black cone look alike thing sticked to the side of the hood. I had no idea what it was, so i pull it off. A month later, i went to my local auto parts and looking around the isles, i saw that mini cone in a package and recognize it from the one on the hood, when i read the package, it said, deer whistle! then i realized what that was and why my passenger side of the bumper was new, same whith the brand new radiator. So drivers, whats your take or experiences? do these deer whistles work or not?
My first encounter with deer.....

Ive got a deer whistle on my truck. My only encounter with deer has been having a "dead" deer that was laid flat out in the middle of a backwoods Nebraska highway at 1am actually get up when I was about 20 feet away and leave. I havent been able to look at roadkill the same since. And let me tell you, it scared the daylights out of my student at the time for her to be laying in her bunk and then hear my start hollering and cussing up a storm like that.

best thing to do with deer is nothing at all. don't swerve don't hit the breaks don't slow down blow the horn or flash your lights. they will move out of your way. anything you do that may confuse them or startle them is a bad thing. if you do happen to hit one insurance will cover it. you still may hit one if they are being chased by something else coyote ect and hell bent for the horizon. last deer i hit was about 5 years ago and it ran right into the side of me. it tried to leap for the gap between the truck and the trailer and was running hell bent out of the woods. smashed in the front of the trailer but didn't touch the truck.
i used to always think people were full of it when they would give me that advice in the past and would normally hit a deer every 1-2 years. then i went to work for a guy and was driving a truck that was running a little hot on long hard pulls and the owner told me to try to hit a deer so he could get a new radiator and air to air on the insurance company. -
If you have a deer standing in the roadway doing the 'deer in the headlights' routine I find the Jake usually gets them moving.
I can see moving left or right to avoid an immobile object if you know it's safe to move there. Trying to avoid a deer that way isn't a good idea though.
I've had many a close call but have yet to hit one. I've never altered my course to avoid one but I will definitely alter my speed.
Here's a recent close call.

Yea but it was 5am in the morning, fog and he was crossing that highway no matter what. Another road kill very popular is the black hog, saw a black hog the size of a small cow. Im replacing the bumper with a chromed one so im not concerned about this one.Last edited by a moderator: May 9, 2015

If its your truck then get a good quality moose bumper on it then you can just smoke the deer and keep on Truckin!

When i was trucking for CRST Malone in Wiliston North Dakota, all i saw was these rigs with huged bumpers on the front like protecting themselfs from elephant collision lol. I never had a problem with them, only that it came out at the wrong place and time.mje Thanks this.

I have the chrome version deer alerts and I've had sightings as recent as last night. Mine work great. The deer are always running towards my lane from off the highway, look at my truck, then sprint the other way. This works for dogs and other small animals also. You have to be moving at least 30MPH before they work.

Damage to the truck front-end is usually minimal with deer. Its best to never ever swerve for any animal.
Ghost Ryder and mje Thank this. -
I'll elaborate further by saying its best not to swerve for anything. If it happens to be a human, you cannot avoid stupid.
