It's already been said a couple times so I'll just support their answers.
Nowhere in the regulations say you have to stay intrastate in short haul operations. It is recognized in the lower 48 states and not one state has tougher rules in regards to short haul.
You'll see many short haul operations log only because they have a driver or two that runs outside the circle. So to keep their records simplified they make everyone log. A company has that choice. So one can't base their answer on what your company made you do.
All you have to do is meet these requirements.
Ghost Ryder Thanks this. -
The '500 nm' radius local reg is bogus. A state cannot make a federal law more lenient, but they can add restrictions. One simply cannot drive 500 miles and be back at the reporting terminal within 12 hours anyway.

I know of enough milk haulers who run that distance and are back in time. There stuff is all consistant everyday and the drop n hook.
-
You can run the distance in time, that much is true. 250 there and 250 back shouldn't be a problem. That's not what I said though. You cannot run 500 miles one way and be back within 12 hours.
Unless your truck has a jet engine and you're traveling at Mach 1. -
