I will like to read your opinion on this business plan. I'm leaving my regular job (full time) due to the BS and Politics and I'm planning to start my own trucking business. I have been driving for a few months with a friend of mine who is O/O. He is independent and has over 10 years of experience.
I'm planning to buy a tractor(under 30,000) and he will buy a reefer (probably under 15,000). We are planning to drive as a team. My friend's wife will find the loads for us ( she is been doing this for over 6 years) we are planning to split the earnings after the fuel and dispatch and if there is any repair on the equipment.
This friend currently own a truck , but he would find a driver to run his truck and make some extra money that way.
What do you guys think about this idea.

Yea trucking has NONE of that in it:biggrin_25523:

If he has a truck, why are you buying a truck and yall team drive?? Why not just drive his??

One more question is, how long do you expect a $30k truck to last team driving?

    Lilbit and Clasix1055 Thank this.

I can tell you from experience that teaming with a good friend will test you. It's one thing to be best buds but when your in a cab 24/7 it can be taxing on your friendship. That's as good a plan as any if you can make it work. Don't listen to those nay Sayers they are just mad they still drive for a company and too scared to make a move on their own. Make sure you put aside repair money...buying a truck at 30k your going to be behind the eight ball if you have something go wrong. I do see a future problem though if your buddy doesn't vet his new driver well then it could make for more stress down the road for him I.e. if his driver doesn't show up for work and you guys are out and about...other than that when a problem arises take care of it then not when it's out of control...

Ok, naysayer here.. Sounds like an agreement that'll end up fraught with all sorts of problems when things go wrong. Not "if" things get into a mess, "when" they do. Good luck.

    I'll second Rollin's sentiments.

Why is he willing to burn up your tractor running team, but not his.

I'd love to be less than cynical about this proposed venture but, alas, it cannot be so...........

Check back in six months and let us know how it's going.

I wouldnt do it, it has problems written all over it. Plus you are not very experienced, and it may lead to you being taken advantage of. If youre deadset on buying a truck get one for yourself and lease on with someone for a while and see how it goes. Business partnerships destroy friendships. Ive seen it happen a lot. You will burn thru a cheap truck quick running team. Ask yourself this, why would a guy put a driver in his truck and run in yours? When your truck goes down you are the one thats out, he still has income. It just seems that theres more risk for you.
