    being with a 48 flat the last 2 years. i'm familiar with the rules pertaining to overhang on those type of trailes. basically 4 ft front and 4 ft rear overhang before needing flags and light bar on the rear. and then there's the various state regs as to how far you can go before needing permits.

    but what's the rule on 53 steps?

    i've heard you can't have overhang if the load sits entirely on the bottom deck. true or not?



    what's the rule regarding front and rear overhang. if i haul 60 ft rebar. 4 ft front overhang. leaving 3 for the rear. so i wouldn't need permits???? and technically no flags or light bar????

    and besides cali only allowing 40ft kingpin. what other states. and i'm guessing your limited to the 34k on the trailer also.

    i see connecticut and new york on the atlas.

    the back axle on the trailer can slide to the forward axle. making it a tandem instead of a spread

    In Texas you can have 4' off the back and 3' off the front. With a 53' trailer your legal to haul 60', right? Well, only if all your rebar is lined up perfectly and is loaded exactly 4' off the back and 3' off the front. That will never happen.

    i'm not just talking rebar though. i've had plenty of other types of loads that hung off the back. (cars, wood, etc).

    I've never heard that rule before.

    No rear overhang allowed on a 53 without a permit (there are exemptions to this rule...poles and steel are two I believe). You must permit a 53 for any rear overhang. They will not give you a permit if the load is divisible. What's your overall length? You must be over.

    41' from KP to rear axle is max allowed in US ***I NEED TO DOUBLE CHECK THE TICKET WE GOT LAST WEEK THEN I CAN QUOTE THE REG***


    40,000 if it's a 121" spread....34,000 when it's closed up.

    i could be wrong but the atlas looks like cali is 40 ft. kp to center rear axle. if i slide the back axle up i get 39.10

    total length is 75 ft.

    being in salt lake. my best chance for a load out might be steel. to which i'd take some 60 ft. rebar somewhere. i really don't want to mess with tarping structure. i'm hoping to start taking a break from that crap.

    What is your source for this? If I am reading the TxDMV website correctly, there is no limit on the tractor's length, a trailer can be a max of 59', with a rear overhang of 4' and a front overhang of 3'.

    Are we talking about the National Network/Qualifying highways? For example, NY only allows a max of 65' overall length on "non qualifying highways"

    My source was Nova Permits when I called to ask them if I needed a permit for rear overhang on the load of steel that was on my 53' step. I was told no rear overhang on a 53. I didn't believe it and they supposedly double checked with NYDOT and they confirmed it .

    I wasn't really satisfied with quoting hearsay, so I went googling but I'm afraid this source isn't much better LOL.

    It seems to come down to the DOT's definition of maximum trailer length. In their minds, I guess length of trailer includes the load. So I wonder in the case of TXDOT, you are allowed 4' RO on a 53' but none a 59'? Or to put it another way, you are allowed to utilize overhang so long as it doesn't exceed 4 ft or 59 ft trailer length?
