I have a cat mxs that has developed higher oil consumption as of late. Pulled turbo plumbing and found no signs of oil. checked air compressor and no air loss or oil in air dryer. small amount of smoke out of breather but not any more than has always been there also no signs of leak or oil on truck. usage ranges from 4 to 6 gals in 12000 miles. using mobile delvac. also notice a drop in oil pressure after about 2000 miles on a change from 70-75 psi to 58-62 any ideas?????

how many miles on motor?
-
710,000 with no internal work done yet as far as I know.
-
How much oil are you putting in when you do the oil change?
-
Any oil in the radiator? Excessive exhaust smoke?
-
9 gallons fills everything even filter
-
No oil in radiator. Only excessive smoke is after overnight idle. But it has always loaded up after long idle
-
It's a 40 quart sump iirc. Sounds like your dipstick needs to be calibrated. If its burning that much oil I would just overhaul it.

My Acert takes 10 gal+filter, your stick is too long,(I bet you never heard that before,LOL) but seriously that still doesn't explain the excessive consumption. When you said "it has always loaded up after long idle", are you talking idle(600-700 rpm) or fast idle(800-900 rpm)? Although at this point it doesn't matter, I'm just guessing, but if it "loads up" enough to smoke excessively after idling (fast or not) an injector (or 2 or 3) are leaking and the cylinders (and rings) are probably gone. I'd say your 12lbs drop in oil pressure in 2000 miles is from fuel dilution (now we are getting into maybe some bearing damage, do you have any oil analysis'?) I'd say if you like the truck overhaul it and replace ALL the injectors with good ones (not just Cat remaned), put a Haney tune on it and it should go more than a million. Also if you have to idle(for more than 5-10 min) make sure its at 800-1000 rpm to keep from washing down cylinders. If your idling while laying over, you might want to concider an APU the $ you save in fuel will more than pay for it, not to mention the wear and tear savings.
