saw this twice on lobsterboats. one was a 6-71 Detroit and the other was 3406 cat. went off like a rocket. shut off fuel at filter use
fire exting in intake. shut down in about 8 seconds which was like an hour. if happened to me on the road I would try to sever fuel line
anywhere and use exting in intake and clean up fuel later

It is standard equipment for most fire trucks to have an intake air cutoff flap. Since fire trucks respond to emergencies at locations such as chemical plants or refineries it is possible to have flammable fumes in the air around the trucks. This would also cause a runaway, but those flaps would close in an instant and kill the engine immediately. Runaways are pretty rare as it is. But, it would be better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it!

by simply cutting one of the connecting hoses from the air to air and pulling it away, would had cut the fuel (hot motor oil from the turbo) into the motor and it would stop by it self if the ignition was off.

Who says you can't learn anything off the internet? An issue i've thought of, but never experienced. I'd have never thought of simply cutting the air to air hoses.

Cutting the rubber boots won't kill it, still need to choke it out with a piece of flat board or mud flap. Turbo inlet.

What they mean is, cut the air to air boot at the intake of the engine to cut off the engine oil that the turbo is blowing through the intake air. The runaway in question has had a turbo failure and it is dumping engine oil into the intake. The engine is sucking in it's own oil and that is what the engine is running on. If you cut off that oil supply the engine will die. I would like to add a disclaimer! Do this at your own risk. Others here have said it is safe to do and they have never encountered any problems. In my opinion this could be extremely dangerous. Just because the others say here the engine will not grenade is not a guarantee at all! Anything could happen at any time. Be careful!!! Not worth getting hurt!

i would have just stalled it out by putting it in top gear breaks and dump the clutch.

Thats a hard one to determine what is best to do. If the motor and turbo are under warranty let it go up in smoke. Putting the transmission in a high gear and dumping the clutch is insanity, that clutch could come thru the floor and take your feet off, there is a reason race cars have scatter shields or blankets around the bell housing. With the amount of shock load you could also bend the crankshaft, and spinning at those RPM's something will more than likely break and come thru the block. I would never try to open the hood and cut the intake hose, if something let go inside and came thru the block it could kill you, not woth the risk. If it happened going down the road then I would try to use the brakes to stall it out, if all else fails push the clutch in and let it eat its pigs.
