I need a tractor! I am told by prospective lessee I be pulling about 86,000. He suggests a 13 speed, super singles for weight, three axles for bridges, Kenworth or Pete for quality, Cat for reliability. It like lookin' for hen's teeth! Any ideas? Please don't say TruckPaper!![]()

For intermodal? Those specs are going to cost you big ( except the singles ) Unless your getting a special deal, or it's your own gig tell the lessor 4 q"s. Intermodal won't pay enough to buy this truck. ( You do want to eat, don't you? ) Read about this very truck today too....06, KW , Cat , 18., pusher, 55k bud.........
You need FLD,Columbia, Century, Detroit, and 10 for intermodal and don't pull overweight unless he's paying extra, cause he's sure collecting. I'll bet he does want you to buy something like this. Chances are the rest of the fleet has already said get lost to the 3 axle overweight.
But if you just have too, plenty of this iron coming out of oilfield service. Sniff around Midland / Odessa. Or call Arrow, tell them what you want, they will fix you up.
Good luck -
chalupa What was that truck you read about today? Got a link? We're talking this weekend, we haven't set a pay scale yet. Miles or percentage so I'm hopin' I can eat, I have grown fond of it.

You dont need a "special" truck to pull overweight!! I routinely haul up to 92k with a columbia 14l detroit 10speed with 2.64 rears!! Still get 6 and above for fuel mileage Takes a little bit of time getting up to 65mph

As far as pay, if on a mileage pay plan, its worth an extra 50cpm as my loads of tobacco pay that when its overweight -
I just went and looked at Kansas law and 85,500 is the legal limit on Other Highways so you are correct I don't need a special truck. I do have all these mountains around Kansas City to contend with!
I think I can get by with a 10 speed around here. They are in everything anymore it seems.

Most of the time running intermodal you will have a permit with routing -
Yeah he has a run of about 50 miles to the railyard with empties coming back to his facility. If I can find a lightweight tractor I should be OK.
-
So like 300hp somewhere between 500-600 miles should be ok to pull containers with?
-
I'd look for a truck with at least 450HP to pull containers.

There heavy, have fun eating mac and cheese, I did this with my first truck, what a mistake, you will have to get up at 2am and be on the road by 3am on short runs, to get back and get another one delivered by closing, not to mention blowing tires weekly on the trailers, bias ply junk, that's one shiet job.....
