Good question...I've never really trained anyone , but rode with a few new drivers to show them the ropes of how the company wanted the job done...(set-up and deliver the product)....and a couple of times I went back into dispatch and asked which rocket scientist road-tested this guy....I mean a man tells you he's been driving for 10 years and immediately starts screaming at cars that won't move over and throwing the on-finger how-do-you-do up.....When your pulling a 40foot bill-board around , folks don't just see a rude driver they see your company.....

My guess would be at least 6 to 8 weeks of intensive , hands on training , then a road test from a third party individual with no skin in the game...

I have to disagree with this part. Running team for a portion of the training is actually good for the student because they have to start making the decisions that they will have to make when they are alone but with a lifeline just a couple feet away. The last half of training with me I always tried to get the student to do EVERYTHING on his own because I knew that if I held his hand the entire time that he would forget it all and be lost when he was finally out there on his own. That is also a reason they are pushing to put 2 trainees in a truck to team after the training is over. 2 heads are better than one.

He seems like a good dude, trying to get ahead in the world. Can't blame him for trying.

i just got out of trainee status. Lol , taught my trainer a few things..... But i was only in trainee status as the new guy learning company paperwork and pickup points and drops on dedicated stuff..... My so called trainer only has 1.5 years with the company..... But i gotta give him his due he did do a good job for what he had to do.... Its not like i am some rookie driver learning the ropes and how to drive........ I will go back out next week with a new guy with me....

I think we are on the same page here, go back and read my post #51. Don't you think after a month and a half to 2 months of doing 75 to 90% of the driving and 100% of the paperwork required as well as the planning and everything else that goes along with the job , a trainee should have a grip on the basics.....if not , they need another career path. The trainer is only there to make sure that once the trainee has the basics down , he is able to do the job.

Too many people put way too much weight on trip/time management , at least IMO. For the simple reason , the company wants that 1 more load delivered......A trainee should have 1. Safety 2. Safety 3. Safety......drilled into their heads...everything else is academic...if you can't read a map ,take the time to make a phone call or 2 to set -up delivery/pick-up times , or get "good" directions. Then the trainer ain't gonna help you a bit...this stuff is not rocket science..its common sense for the most part.

2 trainees in a truck is a train-wreck waiting for a place to happen.....Companies should take the time , pay the money , and make sure that the trainers aren't rookies themselves. A team operation means that at any point of the trip (from start to finish) , either driver can take over and do anything that needs to be done to deliver/pick-up the product that is on/in the trailer , without any help from the co-driver.....the team part is to keep the truck in motion 24/7 , nothing else. Teams don't train...teams truck......simple.

The only reason these training wheel outfits uses 2 students as a team truck is simply for one reason and one reason only one.....

    Cheap team labor!!
