Flatbed or dry van

yup half the time they don't even care if it gets wet, consignees more often than not leave stuff outside anyway.

 

I done Flatbed, Reefer/Van. I enjoyed them all, even Flatbed. But my health would not allow me to remain in flatbed or limited me in what I could do. But out of the 3 I enjoyed Flat bed the most. Just me and tarps did not get along. One of my best jobs was pulling flat beds with a Crane on it. 19 drops and dead head home. Did that every week. I was able to unload even if nobody was there at the receiver, well there was but 6 feet under.

My company sometimes has those loads that they want tarped even when the shipper/consignee don't required it. In that case I just strap and roll...Lol. anyhow, I like flatbed. Gives me some physical activity and less wait time in general but let's not sugar coat it, I've been to those steel mills that I've had to wait all night to get loaded after driving all day, but doesn't happen often.

Flatbed does pay higher than van in most cases. Although I can't speak for my company in that regard, most flatbed companies pay a higher rate than van jobs.

I'll agree with that but the guy said its where the highest paying loads are on average. I never saw an average over 2.00/mile yanking around a skateboard. Even with the tarp pay included. As a company driver it may be better but as an o/o in my lanes pay wasn't very good. Specially deadheading 150 miles to pickup a load that paid decent. Although at least in flat bedding I could run on days like today. I'm a bit screwed right now I refuse to load a hopper in the rain.

 

That the problem I seen with flatbed was having to deadhead much further. While O/O pulling a step deck I had to dead head once as for as the load went, then with the company I was leased to I sat a week waiting for another short haul to wait another week. Next run I made was to home, 1000 miles to turn in the trailer and take Their name off my door

 

I'm hoping to be an oo later down the road. What do younger that pays the highest right now?

I notice that too. Even as a company driver. But at least I get paid the same rate deadheading.
