The wife wants me to find a OTR job so that we can drive around the country together. My question is this: what would be a decent, no nonsense company that would allow my wife and one small dog to live in the truck for a month or so at a time? I'm thinking maybe a flatbed company because I'm a driver, not a grocery warehouse lumper. We would need a company that has big enough sleepers so that we could have room for a tv and plenty of storage space. I have heard good things about Sammons, but that lease option kind of scares me. I know it's all in Sammons favor, but it MAY be an option for me.

Storage space..........lol good luck on that. You will have some space, but not alot. The sleeper is basically a eight foot by eight foot closet with a bunk bed inside that closet. There is storage under the lowest bunk. Otherwise you have 3 closets and maybe a fridge. The closets are about a foot wide and two and a half feet tall. Some trucks have a TV, most company trucks you provide a TV. Easier to get a notebook and use that to watch video. There is a desk area directly behind the drivers seat, that is usually directly over the fridge.
The common truck you will use is a Freightliner. This is a link to what you would see for interior. The top bunk is not scene as the photographer has folded it up (needing a place to stand).

Here are my questions for you. If you are local and making decent money why would you give that up specially if you been with the company for a while. If your retired then I could see that. Second a lot of flatbed company's use those smaller sleepers with one bed really small you might not enjoy that you are gunna have to look at the company's with condo cruisers

Have you ever pulled a flatbed, and tarped? A lot of flatbedding requires a lot of dirty, hard work.
Yes, there are some loads you just throw a few chains or straps on, and boogie, but that's not the norm.
You may have more down time, waiting between loads.
You got to love this forum, people with no experience or limited experience are usually the first to reply. -
Want to really know if your spouse loves you? Live with them in a small enclosed area for a month or so at a time. If the spouse drives also then you will be seeing each other for about 10 minutes a day while you switch.
A thing to remember is this whole OTR is not like loading up the camper and going to see the sights. It's a job that takes you to ALL the places you'd never go in a right frame of mind.lovesthedrive, str8rida, quetzalcoatl and 1 other person Thank this. -
I'm thinking a RV is more in line with your needs.

You sound like a st8 truck expediter and don't know it. You should talk to Expediter Services in the Memphis area, I think this might suit you.

One of the problems that you may run into with flatbeds is that some of the places you may pickup ( ex U.S. Steel) do not allow passengers, now if your wife has a CDL also, then its not a problem.
My husband and I live in our truck OTR, we use the top bunk as storage, though it will make the sleeping area more claustrophobic. We have 2 small dogs, 2 tv's, a v-cube ( we will get that thing mounted eventually. . .hopefully) my x-box, a refer, microwave and the things you need to cook, plus one weeks worth of cloths for the two of us. It's an excersize in neatness and aranging everything so that it all fits.
My husband and I would have prefered to keep the top bunk folded back, but we also want to have/keep the things we store their. Small totes, crates and storage bags are my tips.
Good luck, IDK anything about Sammons, so can't help with that. Their are other companies that allow passengers ( full time or part time) and pets. . lots of info on companies here on the forum.freebirdrfd Thanks this. -
If you are making good money now, then stay where you are. To give up a good paying job, just to drag your wife along with you on the road, is a fool's decision. After you spend every waking hour with her in a small confined space, your wife is going to get very tired of seeing you.
Oh, and flatbedding? You have to be nuts. All that storage space you want, will be taken up with spare cargo straps, bungee cords, 2" ratchet straps, and other assorted tools. Plus it is hard, filthy work. Consider cleaner work, like Food Grade Tanker work, or even doing Expediting Work. Roberts Express, FedEx Custom Critical, or Panther II do that kind of work. -
Exactly . Large sleepers , no forced dispatch . You choose where and when you go . Accepted availability is 75% . Most teams run 3 or 4 weeks then take a week off . Expedite loads mean no waiting to load or unload . http://www.successfulexpediters.com/madsen/freebirdrfd Thanks this.
