I've been looking into going to Millis to get my CDL. I have read nothing but positive reviews and am really looking forward to getting started there. Any advice on not freaking out driving a truck and a manuel for the first time? Thanks everyone.

Jamesensley, you will be fine. MILLIS will show you everything that you need to know before you come out with a driver trainer. You get 3 weeks of training to get comfortable with the truck before you come out on the road. Millis is a great company.Good luck.

Ok I've read a few threads where potentials have said all they hear is good things about Millis. Although Millis is a great company they are not perfect (no company is) so I am going to try to the best of my abilities, the PRO'S and CON'S from my point of view. I started like many of you want to. Zero experience, went to the Millis school, went out with a trainer, then got my own truck. I'll start with the pro's

    1) Very nice equipment, I've been here a year and drive a 2013 truck

    2) 99% Kenworth fleet, 72" bunks with refrigerator

    3) Most dispatchers will run you how you want to run, want to bust your ### running hard? Ok. Want to only run 8 hours a day then stop? That's Ok too.

    4) Pretty good at getting you home when you need to be

    5) 1.5 days home for every 7 out (most companies are 1/7)

    6) Weekly Pay

    7) No forced NYC or Long Island

8.) weekly easy to achieve mileage bonus

    9) 5 free Millis shirts and a hat upon completion of the school

    10) Good reputation with customers, other drivers from other companies respect you. (unlike swift, werner, jb hunt)

    11) Great maintenance, if you have an issue it's fixed

    12) no forced routes (could easily go 50-60 miles out of route to go home for the night with nothing ever said to you about it) (unless it was a constant, every load thing)

    13) No forced fuel stops

    14) Can call and ask to speak with a "Millis" and it's not an issue, no questions asked

    15) Trucks go 66 (just fast enough to pass most of the major carriers)

    16) every mile you drive past your home time request is paid at your regular rate plus 5 cents.

    Ok now for the cons

    1) Used to be a "home time guarantee" now it's a "home time request"

    2) The 5 cents you get for being late for home time must be requested and is taken straight from your dispatchers pocket. You piss him off, there goes your miles for a few weeks.

    3) Dash cams being implemented facing inside the cab (I talked to a driver today that has had one for a few weeks, has had no critical events yet Dan (safety guy) sent him a list of everything he is doing wrong while driving.) so being told he only sees them when critical events happen is a lie.

    4) If your truck touches anything it's not supposed to, and you do the right thing and report it, they will charge you money for it. Even if there is ZERO expense to Millis or their insurance.

    5) Our strict safety guy, has never driven a semi nor is he a CDL holder. Yet he still tries to tell you how to safely drive your truck.

    6) Have a rule against Any cell phone usage while driving, even with blue tooth. If you call while driving they will hang up on you.

With all that said now you can make your own choices on Millis. I'd personally say the Pro's far outweighs the Cons.

i dont think its 99% kenworth. we have a bunch of Freightliners as well. I would say more like 75% kenworth.

I didn't realize they were no forced dispatch to those areas. I was only told they paid extra for doing it. It probably wouldn't be in the driver's best interest to turn down work anyway if they can do it.
