to me it looks like the dunnage broke on the second row of pipes you can see it sticking out. Driver error and bad dunnage may have been the combination that caused this. if i recal my flatbed training his load looks properly secured

Looks like someone found out doing a 90 degree back with a top heavy load doesn't work very well.
SHC Thanks this. -
All his winches are on the drivers side, which in this case was a good thing.

don't tell me that trailer didn't tip over.
-
No not really. Doing that, it pulls all from one side. Thus trying to push the load out, which is to the right side..
Should of staggered the winches from one side to the other.KW Cajun Thanks this. -
From these pics it's really hard to tell if the load shifted(which it doesn't look like) or if there was some sort of mechanical failure. I have pulled a flatbed for 10+ yrs and this load looks well strapped down and having the winches all on one side will not cause any problems unless you have a real high light load like pvc pipe and even them if you tie it down properly it still won't be a problem and don't drive like your in a sports car.

Not unless the Wrecker that showed up tipped it after I left.
And don't think he was backing when it happened, anybody that's familiar with that FJ, it wasby the Pumps a little ways back. -
Looks like either the load shifted due to taking the turn a bit too fast or the dunnage broke/slipped. Like someone else mentioned, it looks like it has plenty of straps on it. Maybe some belly strapping would have helped, but I haven't hauled enough pipe of that size to know for sure. Nor enough tiered piped. Usually when I have hauled it it was smaller and all on the same tier which makes securement a bit easier.

Well, except for milled steel stock bars that they leave the milling oil on to prevent corrosion... hate that stuff.... -
I drove flats for 8 years, and have never, even once had a single problem with all my winches being on the same side. This old wise tale about the need to stagger winches from side to side always makes me laugh. The only exception would be if the straps were hooked to the load, instead of the other side of the trailer. Otherwise, the strap is pulling down toward the winch, not sideways across the load.biged169 Thanks this.
