2000 12.7 Detroit. Truck started pulling sluggish tonight on hills. I figured it was a fuel filter. Shut it off at a diner and went out and it wouldn't start. Turns over just fine. The primer pump on the fuel water separator isn't doing anything and the filter is full. A small shot of ether makes it crank for a VERY brief moment and that is it. No shut down codes or CEL. The parts guy at freight liner said maybe the check valve or even the fuel pump. Any other ideas?

Sounds like a fuel issue. any chance the filters are plugged bad load of fuel? Its possible the fuel pump went but not that common.
-
Changed out the water separator as I had a spare. Going to have to get the other one tomorrow at Newburgh Freightliner. The primer pump has no pressure and isn't moving any fuel, so I wonder if I'm sucking air somewhere or if it is the checkvalve
-
if its sucking air a good place to look is the shut off valve under the cab mounted at the rear of the tranny they have been known to leak and be half closed from bouncing if you can air up the fuel tank using the vent line u can usaully find a leak or force fuel up to the filter
-
The check valve at the back of the head prevents leak down after shut down so I do not think it would cause it to run sluggish. Jameslawton is rite an air leak or shut valve would prevent the primer from working. If it was an air leak I would expect to see the filter dry though.

Yet another good reason for using a Davco filter unit. Takes a lot of the guesswork out of things.

You get that issue resolved 40cal?

Well, I think the problem was the filters, which pulled air in from somewhere. Service truck came out and pressurized the tanks to prime the system ( no leak found though), used a scan tool( nothing) and a little ether and it finally started. Booked a light load back to FL at 6pm tonight for pickup tomorrow, talk about lucky, and I'll be swapping all my fuel lines and putting in a Davco to replace this cheesy Racor I have. I'll probably just go ahead and swap the check valve as well since it is pretty easy on the Star. I'm going to meet up with rebel in a couple weeks, and see if the battery code on the ecm is still being triggered which may mean a rebuilt tuned ecm.
x#1 Thanks this. -
Glad it all worked out. Sounds like you have a good plan for what to do next.

Put in a Davco 382 for sure.
