Yes. Set the trailer brakes. Back up, while still applying rearward pressure set the tractor brakes. Then put it in neutral and go pull the handle.

Back truck under trailer after dropping suspension , back slowly until you hear it lock in , inflate suspension. There is no need in slamming the tractor into the pin. Clean the plate and the locking mechanism till its to the metal. Get red and tacky or some thick heavy made to use grease , spread it evenly into the pockets of the plate after it was cleaned of all debris, make sure you get grease into the locking area , also get a can of we40 or pj blaster and spray front mechanism and slide for fifth wheel. If you have problems releasing the pin when loaded, always drop your airbags and jus gently back into pin to release the tension on the jaws. This always works. Fifth wheels are durable and last years if taken care of. Yet I see people all the time slamming into pins to lock them. They were never intended to be used in such a manner. Good luck! Worse it comes to is buying a new plate for about $900 bucks.

Do you have the switch to? Just because the company doesnt allow you too. Doesn't mean you can't. Company's put policy and rules in place for the idiots. If you use it correctly you won't have a problem. Example. Swift has a policy about backing. Here is what they want you to do whenever you are backing into a parking spot or dock. Pull up to the spot and before you put it in reverse you get out and look. Then get back in the truck and type a free form message GOAL and send it and then start honking your horn randomly as you are back then back halfway into the spot and go goal again. And get in and start honking again til you get it in. Can you imagine doing that at a truckstop and 10 at night. Honking the piss out of your honk. You would have a lot of pissed off people lol. What I do is pull up to the spot and then back it in there then after i back it i type goal. If you know you are not going to hit anything there is no since in a screwing around for 5 minutes goaling. If there is any doubt get out and look but good example last night I rolled into a pilot and there was 3 spots open there's no reason in the world you hit something backing into the spot. The only time I honk my horn while backing is in a terminal. The company policy's are for the people without common since. My point is if you use the air dump correctly and not screw stuff up you will be fine. If your truck doesn't have the switch when you are ready to drop the trailer pull just your trailer air supply and once the brakes and locked back against it and then set your tractor brakes and it should release easily if not have a shop fix it.
