I have test drove a couple of 98 model trucks with 475 cats in them. i noticed on both of them that for a good while after starting them that they ran a little rough, not a dead miss but rough enough to notice. Is this normal for that engine? One guy said he thought that cat has a computer controlled timing retard until they warm up. another guy said he thought they might have a fuel line sucking a tiny bit of air, in my opinion a tiny bit of air would darn near kill it dead. Do ya'll have any suggestions about this?

That's a 10 year old truck! How many miles on them? Could be a lot of possible causes. If you have engine serial numbers or at least the engine serial number prefix I could do a little research for you. Could be a vlve clearence issue all the way to a cold injector to timing to primary fuel filter....

Yes,If there was a tiny bit of an air sucking issue(example a loose fuel filter),the engine will drop dead as your initial thoughts. It is recommend to plug in the block heater at anything below 40f.That CAT has 11Gallons of motor oil and another 11Gallons of coolant to perculate. That roughness is a tell-tale sign, saying"Give me a minute to get my scruples together","Take it slow and easy on me for a couple".Just The Nature of The Beast.
