Ran into another couple in the same situation as my husband and I, he drives, she "housekeeps" in the truck. Now like my hubby and I they started out OTR in flatbeds (same company oddly enough) but he decided 5 yrs ago that he was getting to old for "skateboarding in winter", so started at the company he and my hubby work at now.
They have been "liveing outa the truck" for 6 yrs. 4 more and they can retire with full ssi benefits and will buy a house. That was their goal and they are working towards it.
If my hubby and I last 2 yrs otr together we will have met the goal we wanted, monetarily.
Edit; I should have said " they have been living outa the truck FULL time the last 6 yrs, she stayed with her daughter and helped with the grandkids here and their.Last edited: May 20, 2013

Pick a truckstop 9+ years and loving every minute of it.
To the OP all our prayers are with you and yours. -
I did it for about 5 of my 8 years. I had a storage for my winter gear (clothes, boots, and truck acutriments) I enjoyed the Volvo 780 for it's table and seating set up. I had my little dog and when we needed to get out of the truck it was La Quinta. Soon, my stays boosted me to Platinum level frequent stayer and a free room every so often. They're everywhere, and pet friendly. Because I wasn't always in a hurry to get "home" I got to explore, and take in sights more often than not. I had a UPS Store address (on my driver's license, by the way!) and loved my life during that time. Sorry for your wife's medical situation. Be strong.

I lived in a truck from 1992- 2012. Saved a bunch of money. During that time I have bought 2 new tractors and 1 new car. No loans. Debt free since 1987. Got off the road to assist my elderly parents.Mother had to undergo cancer treatment. She is doing ok now. I am thinking about going back to work. My Peterbilt is in the driveway. I have considered buying a house but taxes and maintenance would cost me about $5000 / year I figure. So not in a hurry to buy. My financial situation is good. Worked a lot and saved. I got into trucking during a bad economy and thought I would drive 5 years and get out . But trucking can become a habit I guess.Living in a truck can get tiresome and have spent too much time around trucks sometimes. I wish the OP and his wife the best.Cancer treatment has come a long way. The doctors didn't think they could do much for my mother due to poor health but decided to treat her cancer anyway and 1 year later they don't detect any cancer now. So her life has been extended.
Working Class Patriot, Aireal and roadlt Thank this. -
