I've heard that they do sometimes hire Class A drivers off the street for parcel division, but its probably a matter of knowing somebody who knows somebody who can get you in like Flynn. The only time I've seen Parcel actively looking for drivers is during 4th quarter/holiday season, when they scrounge around for yard help at scab wages, until they cut you loose on December 26th.

UPS Freight, while a much smaller deal than parcel, is also pretty darn good job. Top wage is in the $25-26/hr range I've heard. That probably varies a bit from local to local though.

Yeah UPSF is a good job but they'll work you once a week til you get seniority. Their top out on line in 3 yrs is .61-.65cpm. You got to have no bills and another job on the side to make it work there.

@Cool35 your favorite highway the I-5. Just as useless as the i84 by me. The Newburgh-Beacon bridge has been backed up for miles everyday the past week during the day. YIKES. thankfully I work at night. Well I dont dont mind hanging with my woman but then again Im not married so when I do get a break when she goes home LOL

@Brandonpdx the UPSF freight wage you posted is right around what those guys make around here. I wish Parcel would hire here as a feeder driver lol, I'd go in a heartbeat, I dont feel like spending years in a step van, 1 year of that was enough for me, but was a great way to meet girls on my routes when I did that LOL. UPSF just re-opened another terminal, they took work from a Jersey terminal, and a CT terminal and the Northern UPSF terminal gave them the two NY counties and they took the BRonx. A guy I met on my peddle route last year told me he drove 75 miles everyday to his area, now with the other one open its only about 25-30. I asked him if they are hiring off the street for that and he told me they are requesting drivers to transfer there, if guys dont choose to they are entitled to unemployment as its a change of operations. Also he said a few select will be able to start pulling the parcel trailers to help out Parcel. HE did tell me it wont be parcel pay, as they are still working under UPSF but heck keeping a job and doing that isnt too bad. By us there are quite a few freight trucks pulling parcels trailers... Actually Ive been seen a ton of sleepers in my area, not truckoad but the freight guys, guess they are starting teams now

I doubt it for parcel. They are union they won't allow it. Ppl waiting in line for years. They'll post it to the public for legal purposes. The only way is seasonal but they are just using you, even if your the best driver in the world they'll hire up their dock guy or van guy who's in line to take it. It's all seniority there. UPS F is the only one that'll take drivers off the street it's actually how they get most of their drivers. But your fighting seniority to work cause nobody quits there.

Yeah I know. Parcel is it's own little universe and kinda crap unless you started there when you were 19 sorting packages part time for $8.50/hr. (As an aside, I heard their new contract gets package handlers an extra $1.50, to $10/hr which should take effect either July or August 1...can't remember.) They advertise like crazy all over the country during peak season for "tractor-trailer drivers", but they pay the seasonal scabs like $15-16/hr and I've heard they just put you in a yard hostler and make you move trailers all night. They won't cut you loose in line power and send you out on a run with two trailers if you're just seasonal guy, probably. You're doing the crap work nobody else wants to do.

Freight division basically works just like any other LTL. Typical union chicanery can come into play, but they appear to hire full timers off the street if they need them. I applied just for fun today for a line haul position in one of their Seattle area terminals, and it was advertised as full time. At the end of the application it prompted me to schedule a time next week either Wed or Thurs to come to the terminal and meet with somebody in person. Not sure if that's a good sign or just the usual crap they put you through. We'll see. Getting tired of liftgate delivery route hell.

Make a thread on how it goes. Not many ups F guys say anything. I could be wrong on the whole getting work they could be slammed. Sounds like your going linehaul cause your tired of the p&d stuff? I think your going in to see HR theyll give you the benefits and pay low down then youll see the TM who will go over the job etc. They did the same at US Foods union job.

I got hired by UPSF once as a line driver. Took 2 months to get in! When I finally went down to sign my final paperwork they informed me the position was for local driver now. I said, I was hired for line haul and they said, sorry but all we have is local now. I said, thanks for the opportunity and walked out. I don't do local, never have, never will.

I'm tired of liftgate route P&D specifically...it's grunt work to the max and a pain in the butt, but it's a job. Line would be fun to try. If it's really that easy to possibly get my foot in the door with a good bigger company like UPS, I'd go for it. Pay would definitely have more topside possibility. Maybe I will start a thread and chronicle what happens. It wouldn't surprise me given the time of year needing more drivers. They were advertising for city drivers at one of the other area terminals as well.

Yes UPS rarely takes people off the street for feeder driver. They now take guys from UPSF and have them help out if they aren't working.

I got tired of p/d too. I don't think I want ever do it again. Hours are nice but too much stress. I like line-haul better. On my bid I average 750-900 a week. Doing p/d that would be a 60 hour week killing myself!
