IF I am a trucker at all, yet, I am as new a one as possible. I start school in a few weeks and am spending my time studying for all the CDL and endorsement tests and reading books on semi operations so I'm not clueless on school day one. The reason I am moving into trucking, at age 60 yet, is that my old work has largely moved to India and China and there just aren't any jobs in the U.S. now for an old guy. Which is the main thing I want to ask about! When I finish school, are the companies going to be cool with hiring someone my age? Naturally the folks who run the school I'm going to attend say there's no problem, but what's the reality? My health is good, the physical will be no problem, and I can pass for 59 -- maybe 58! Which leads me to the second question. Because I'm not as young I'd prefer to specialize in something where I won't be loading and unloading. Now I'm pretty good with rigging so flatbed work doesn't scare me, (maybe it should??) but unloading a whole trailer full of canned peaches would do me in. So what kind of company should I be looking for?
I have a BIG ignorance problem to get past so if anything I've said here inspires any other advice please feel free to tell me what I need to know. I'm fully aware I have a heck of a learning curve to get through but I don't really have a good idea of its size or shape yet. Rob

Welcome to TTR, yes there are kids for 60 yrs young that won't be a problem, rarely does anyone unload their whole truck unless your a local delivery driver, flatbedders will still have to throw tarps tho.but get paid more, tankers have less physical work than flatbed and pays a little better.
Good luckrobbak11 Thanks this. -
Very little, to no, discrimination in trucking concerning age, race, gender, etc.
I recommend tanker work as the least physically demanding and the best pay.
Flatbed would be my second choice without a doubt.
Both flatbed & tanker are good careers.
Schneider & Prime Inc. both hire new drivers for their tanker divisions. Other companies also do on a case by case basis.
Your age is not an issue, so come on in.robbak11 Thanks this. -
Chinatown - evidently I can't reply to PMs yet as I haven't posted enough, so thanks for all the info in your PM.

I'm so new to this that I have no plans at all to get my own truck, leased or otherwise. Half of what I read makes that sound more like a trap than an opportunity.

I'm in Northern CA. Are there any good companies out this way that mostly do the west-coast corridor?
Chinatown Thanks this. -
trans-system website is an umbrella company for 3 trucking companies that run a lot of I-5 corridor and western states. They also hire new CDL graduates. If you like any of these 3 companies, call and ask if they accept the school you plan to attend. They have terminals in CA also even though the headquarters is in WA.Last edited: May 26, 2013
