MINING equipment giant Caterpillar has turned to computer vision technology developed by Canberra's Seeing Machines to help mining companies around the world stop weary mine haul truck drivers from falling asleep at the wheel with an in-cab computer that watches their facial and eye movements.
Its fatigue-monitoring system sells for $10,000 a unit, plus training, commissioning and analytical report fees.
The agreement expands Seeing Machines' exposure to the estimated 40,000 haul trucks and other mining vehicles of various makes in the global mining industry. Truck accidents due to fatigue regularly cause injuries and deaths, as well as reducing productivity.

Seeing Machines chief executive Ken Kroeger told The Australian that having now established the safety technology in the harshest mining conditions, the next step for the company was to move its eye-tracking technology into wider markets to protect drivers, workers and the public at large.
Mr Kroeger predicted that the technology would eventually find its way into the central console of passenger vehicles which, because of increasing complexity, are being seen as a "distraction" factor by global insurers.
"We firmly believe this will be as commonplace as the airbag in 10 or so years from now," he said.
To that end, Seeing Machines also has some scientists in Detroit working on a project for one of the major car manufacturers.

Why don't they just hook us up to rectal thermometers, blood pressure machines and take a blood sample every two hours while they're at it?

lol but maybe there is an upside to this see now drivers wont be controlled by hos it will be determined by facial expressions or whatever lols heck now you can drive as long as you can fool the computer ha ha ha

So much of new technology is wonderful and beneficial.

So much of it just enables those who control it to nibble away, bit by dwindling bit, at our freedoms and the need for common sense and self-control in their feeble efforts to develop a perfect society.

Glad I won't be around in another 40 or 50 years to see how far it goes.
