Mainstream media seems to go into truck driver shortage blitz mode shortly after any political discussions occur on the nightly news about current job numbers and unemploymant rates.
Few people understand that favorable tax incentives, subsidies, state and local job training grant programs are incentives for truck driver training carriers to cash in. When you see these hysterical reports you should recognize that what is really going on is a positioning for a money grab.
There is no incentive to create qualified drivers, but there is an incentive to create turnover.
We have created a corporate welfare program for big trucking and this has sacrificed safety, good judgement, ethical recruiting and contributes to high turnover. There is little accountability for the lack of retention. This is directly related to mis-management and corporate greed.
Very few qualified truck drivers ever emerge from training carriers , yet these same carriers reap rewards from favorable job programs, high interest tuition loans and selling novice drivers on lease owner operator situations where they are set up to fail from day one.
Qualified drivers begin with qualified truck driving candidates who are prepared for the challenge of living the life of a truck driver. Carrier trade groups like the American Trucking Association who continually report a shortage of Qualfied truck drivers take little responsibility that the training carriers they aggressively represent in Washington D. C. produce few qualified drivers , yet recruit many unqualified candidates. Any trainer who has quit training for fear of their life will atest to this.
Until initiative is taken to examine how a person off the street is sold the dream of becoming an over the road truck driver, which is an entry level position into the industry, this qualified driver safety issue cannot be resolved.
Poor management is the reason there is poor retention. Management is in charge of hiring and putting unqualified drivers on the road and keeping them there. If a truck driver trainer is assigned a student who is not learning, or that continues to have substance abuse problems during training they are often stuck with that person on their truck. Students are worth money to carriers in the form of government incentives to hire the disenfranchised, this is why some carriers target those who can be exploited rather than seek those who would make more qualified candidates.

Great post. I've been thinking the same thing for a couple years. This chronic driver shortage allows for the enrichment of the mega carriers who get very cheap labor and the government incentives for hiring people off of the unemployment and welfare rolls. There is no shortage of qualified drivers but there is a shortage of cheap drivers.
airforcetoo Thanks this. -
Very well said DC.Only reason companies keep on hiring is for the subsidy money which I heard is like 10k per student/driver because the carrier is job creaters.Whatever,If ppl only knew how evil many companies are then just maybe ppl would be on our side. There is'nt a turnover rate, companies force the driver to quit to they can hire another sucker to put on their wall of shame for the subsidy money compliments of the forced tax payers.Loook at all the lavish bonuses for the big boys, new trk,new trailers, upgrading ect.Compnies could'nt afford on that on the loads aloneThey can afford all that but can't afford to pay drivers a decent wage. There may be a driver shortge due to the csa for revenue purposes but far as companies are concerned they could care less, they have our taxes to keep them in wealth.

I have been thinking for a long time about a web site where issues like this could be brought to others attention.
if the general public really understood how things really operate would or could things change.
Another idea I have is a web site similar to Angie's list where drivers can complain about non payment or if they get screwed over at a loading dock. Then if I was to book a load I would have a place to see comments from others about that location. I think over time it may clean up some slow load unload if drivers don't take the loads or leave negative feedback.
If the site got advanced enough it could automatically have a form complaint email letter that emails the company. All of the information to connect the system is readily available on line.
I think once folks stop acting like cattle and stop following the heard things will get better. Also if people complain make sure the ones that can change the situation are he ones that hear you.
DC you have hit it on the head good post.airforcetoo Thanks this. -
I highly doubt a website would do a bit of good unfortunately.Reading about what happens in the trucking industry is the last thing the general public wants to read.Keep in mind most the general public wants nothing to do with trk drivers.

"Qualified drivers begin with qualified truck driving candidates who are prepared for the challenge of living the life of a truck driver. Carrier trade groups like the American Trucking Association who continually report a shortage of "Qualfied" truck drivers take little responsibility that the training carriers they aggressively represent in Washington D. C. produce few qualified drivers , yet recruit many unqualified candidates. Any trainer who has quit training for fear of their life will atest to this "
So VERY VERY trueairforcetoo Thanks this. -
Do you volunteer to be a trainer? Or does the company make you train? I've never seen anybody say one way or another on here.
-
company does not make you train. After I think 6 months they ask drivers to train.
camaro68 Thanks this. -
That is one of the biggest problems the industry has too. With anything less than a minimum of 7 to 10 years experience and an accident free record , and a certification process you aren't even close to being qualified to "train"
