Right now I'm looking at the CDL manual and trying to prepare myself to enter a trucking school. I have read a couple of the "Trucking Confidential" books that alert new people to some of the difficult working conditions that are often encountered.

The answer may be within this forum but, my question is, is there some supplemental book that explains how a commercial vehicle works? I can't find anything at the local bookstores. What I would like to have is a book to describe in depth the things I'm reading in the CDL manual, so I can bone up a little and enter a trucking school with confidence.

I worked in IT over 30 years, lost my job, and have not been successful getting back into that field. Trucking appears to have employment opportunities in a relatively short time frame, so the idea appeals to me and makes sense. Plus, traveling has always been enjoyable and I have some flexibility being single.

I will look forward to looking at the site. Thanks for the welcome extended.

Welcome to TTR, those tests are general information you will find in the manual, if you want more detailed information about who the trucks work you'll need a repair manual to read, but it's not necessary.

The best thing to do right now is keep studying the CDL manual & study the CDL practice tests on the opening page of this website. For the best pay, study for the endorsements to your CDL license, hazmat/tanker. Don't try to over study, because you haven't been around trucks or trucking, so you really have no point of reference yet. Once you complete school, your best paying trucking jobs along with travel you mentioned, will be with a tanker or flatbed company. To prepare early, study for the tanker/hazmat endorsements, get a passport for runs into Canada or thru Canada to Alaska. Get the TWIC (Google for info. on TWIC), which allows entrance to seaports & chemical plants. See, you have a full plate already to prepare for the better jobs. Posts from other CA new drivers, state many tanker companies in CA are now hiring new CDL grads. Look at some websites to get an idea about some quality companies; such as, trans-system and Melton Truck Lines. Best wishes.

Make sure your blood pressure is good; blood pressure medicine is ok to use. Also, make sure your sugar levels are ok; medicine such as Metformin is ok to use. Do this before getting the DOT physical for entrance to truck driving school.
