Typical sensation story. The suggestion that the state police are being diligent about food safety is absurd. They're about as educated on reefer operation as I am with law enforcement (zero, that is). They really need to focus on important safety things like license plates that are too rectangular and the punctuation on driver logbook pages.

Too bad the reporter didn't find out more about what seems to be an ordinary reefer breakdown claim. Was the unit switched off? out of fuel? Was the load already hot when loaded? How did the carrier's CSA equipment score look (as-in truck maintenance may mirror reefer maintenance)?

I have not hauled OTR for yrs. (in state now) and no refer stuff. When I did go East coast with refer there was this "box" that was in trailer (toward back, IIRC it was supposed to stay within 10' of rear doors)
It kept track of temp on a paper. Multi day. So I could look at it afterwards and see when loaded, "warmer" then every stop where rear doors opened to unload/reload. I forget limits but it could not be above certain temp for longer then set time.

I remember I bought some cheese at store. Got home and saw I was overcharged. Went back next day and they said lots of folks brought back becasue it had been mismarked on shelf. Here is your money back, they go to toss it in trash. It was not worth risk. So I say its a waste, they had to get manager to ok selling it to me at price it was (mismarked) on shelf.
