I've been seeing a WHOLE lot of big trucks getting thrown by this, so I thought I'd put it up here.

If you are heading north or southbound on US-220 through Ulster, PA you'll see detour signs at the only stoplight in town, at the intersection of 1022/Bridge St and US-220, indicating a detour for trucks onto Bridge St. These signs are wrong, and following them will place you on roads with a 10-ton weight limit. Save yourself the hassle, and do not regard these signs, as they were placed for trucks running locally on 1043 north of Ulster *on the other side of the river*. If you do not possess a road bond, and are caught there, the fines are measured by the pound overweight (or so I hear).

First, there is nothing going on with 220 from the NY state line to Williamsport, aside from minor road construction in Monroeton, perhaps. Second, the turn onto Bridge St. is tight headed south, and vastly more difficult northbound. If you do get hoodwinked into turning onto Bridge St and crossing the Susquehanna, don't panic or do stupid U turns in the intersection at the end of the bridge (SWIFT, I'm looking at you and I would have loved to get your truck number...). There is a water pickup tap just to your right with a paved parking lot...make a right at the stop sign, turn right into the water tap, and make your U-turn there. Look for all the triaxle water trucks...it's well lit up at night also.

Just don't proceed down the road unless you enjoy attention from bored local LEO's. Lots of the locals really dislike truck traffic down through there, and the only ones that (barely) get a pass are the milk haulers and gasfield trucks.

According to the PA code, any fine for overweight travel on restricted roads are $150 per 500# overweight.
So if you are at 80,000 on a 10 ton road , the fine is about $18,000. Yes, $18,000

Not exactly chump change for the driver.I bet if a company sends you down that route and get caught, the company would'nt take any responsibility.

I don't know how other companies are but all my routing comes with a "check the GD map first" disclaimer.

YES! Definitely do not rely solely on company routing or GPS. I always check my Rand McNally for Truckers, call the customer, and then check the company directions and GPS to see if they match. And it sounds silly, but when I first started driving, I would take a dry erase marker and write my directions on the upper portion of the windshield under the sunvisor. It has helped me, and I still do it if I go somewhere new.

What color marker did you find work the best and what did you use to clean it off the window? This sounds like a useful tip for my husband. Thanks! :)

Sometimes you have to proceed on 10 ton limit roads to make your drop. Check with who you are delivering to. Sometimes businesses are grandfathered and you can legally use weight limited roads to make your drop. I know this is the case with a nursery I drive to in Stoneboro, PA.

I mostly use red, but have used black, blue, and green. Just about anything will wipe it off (napkin, towel, newspaper, hotdog receipt).

On the top of the windsheild on the passenger side I write down the date of the next permit to expire in my permit book. On my triangular window on the driver's side, I have my empty axle weights. On the edge of the windsheild on the driver's side I write down minor repairs for my next trip to the shop. Top on the windshield I write directions...

Only time I have to squint to read it is at night when there is no outside light.
