Eight days ago I began the process for renewing the "X" endorsement on my CDL. I don't actually renew until late March, but, I've heard the horror stories about how long it can take to get the background check accomplished. I thought I should start now, leaving plenty of time to iron out any wrinkles.

I called the local (NC) drivers licence office to obtain instructions. They directed me to Hazprint.com to get the ball rolling.

While at the web page I completed the application, paid the fee of $89.25, and was then directed to a local contractor's office that collects fingerprints. I went the same day and I was already in the system. The technician captured my prints (scanned, no ink) and sent me on my way.

Much to my surprise, today, eight days later, I get a letter from the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) telling me I'm approved and that the NC DMV will be notified of the approval. Sweet!

I suppose the horror stories are being circulated by those who have skeletal remains stashed in their closets. :yes2557:

I started in January, took the application over the phone, they sent me the necessary paperwork, paid my money when I got the fingerprints, and a few days later, got the paper, took it to the Secretary of State, paid the money for the driver's license, took the HazMat test.

    That was it!

First thing I would recommend is to have it timed to your drivers license.

I did mine 18 months ago, and it was to be good for 4 years. My DL is set to expire next month, so now, I have to do the entire process over again.

oh, :biggrin_2556: so what your saying is every 5 years you need to do that whole process over or just backround and fingerprints?

The State of Illinois told me it would be the whole process.

    Fingerprint, Background check, Hazmat test.

Mine took about two and a half weeks. I did the online thing. I went in for the finger prints a few days later. I had to go into dmv to get an mvr printed up for a company I was applying to, and they told me that the hazmat was already in there. A couple of days later I got the notification in the mail. I suppose they have their system squared up a bit now, so things are taking forever as they have in the past.

it only took a couple weeks to get mine. don't you love how the govt. keeps coming up with new ways of taxing people?

can anyone tell me if you make more money having a hazmat? seems very expensive if you aren't going to make more bucks.

I just can't see getting one unless you haul a chemical tanker on a regular basis. I did 48 state irregular-route for three years and regional for two years--I don't even need two hands to count the number of times I've hauled a haz-mat load. Too much hassle if you ask me. If the company wants you to have it, they can pay for it.

The bull**** background checks don't make our country any safer--just like gun control laws don't prevent "G Money" from poppin' a cap in you for a $20 rock. He won't be driving the truck, but Osama Bin-Badguy is gonna find a way to get the fertilizer and diesel from somewhere... trust me.
