Ever heard of the 2 hr extension? Getting held up at a receiver is no big deal as you can off duty drive to park.

 

Rest areas? Weigh stations? There are more places to park at than a TS. Especially in the SLC area.

 

IMO, that needs to happen.

 

If there aren't flaming boulders shootin' atcha out of Thor's arse, DOT takes a dim view of anything that one could call an "unforeseen emergency."

Short on time? Stop, pull the brake handle, and wait for the duty status to change automatically... that should happen right away. Elog systems will record that as a hard change of duty status, log the event, and get a GPS tag on the event location. Whatever allowance for moving around before the next automatic change to the drive line is available for you to find your parking spot, and get into it.

Always roll around to the back of the parking lot. I'll come in after midnight and many times find all kinds of open spots- while the wheel grippers are parked in the fuel island, by the scales, in the middle of the entrance driveway, halfway into the ditch with the trailer in a farmer's field- actually saw that one time...

I still wonder about the tire tracks one can see going off of the pavement into the dirt, and OVER the edge of the steep embankment (maybe 50' to the bottom) on the highway side of the parking lot at the Dandridge TN PEElot. What was that moron thinking?

 

Ok elogs has nothing to do with people parking at truck stops. Most are fat and lazy and don't wanna walk. Prove me wrong.....

True, but the circumstances I quoted would qualify under the unforeseen emergency, for the most part. The only time when traffic jams wouldn't be considered is during normal rush hour. Forecasted weather won't work either. It has to be something that catches you off guard.

 

Detained at a shipper or receiver is an operational problem, not an "unforeseen emergency." Darnit. Where's Thor when ya need him to get even with those evil shippers 'n receivers???
