I have been working at the Columbus terminal for Estes for the last 2 plus years as a city driver. Recently I filled out an app for a city job for abf because I heard they had 4 guys retiring. I have already had my interview and now I'm in the waiting line on a yes or no. My question is, what would be the better long term company? I know the pay is more at esters but no overtime till 55, and no pension and I pay for benefits. There's also the contract issue with abf. All I want is the best place to retire from.....the long term goal. It's not that I'm unhappy with Estes it's just that I'm not sure that long term it's a good choice. Please please please load this post up with all the answers you got!!!!!
Abf or Estes express?

It really depends on your personal situation. As far as the pay and benefits, you will be much better off at ABF.. You will probably have to put in some time with ABF before reaching top pay, but you can rest assured that the top pay with ABF is much higher than Estes. You might be facing some layoffs before you get enough seniority to avoid lay-offs.
If you can suffer through working as the "bottom man" with ABF, my advice to you is to take the job. -
how do I know the pension is going to be there in 10 to 15 years or when I retire? I'm looking at the long term goal. I know the money will be there in time but the benefits is what gets me looking around.

As I stated, your decision is a personal decision, but what pension are you going to have with Estes when you retire? I would put my money on the pension with ABF through the Teamsters before I would with Estes. There is no sure things in life except death and taxes.

how lucrative is an abf job? Estes jobs pop up all the time and seem to get filled. This is the 1st time ive seen a abf job posted for Columbus. Wondering if thats because of the new contract? To me its either they are swamped or someone wants out because they think their $$ is getting robbed.....plus at whole layoff thing sounds bad. Of course the terminal manager doesn't know if they will happen. They wanna hire 4 guys and apparently im the 1st to call which means ill have seniority immediatly....but not much

If anyone has ANY opinion, by all means, post on here. I need all the help I can get. Theres 4 jobs to fill at abf and if the promise or riches and pensions and a great place to work are there, I wana be first in line. I have yet to hear someone talk bad about abf. I know every place has quirks but whats the worst thing at abf?

The new contract stipulates CDL holders start at 90% and reach 100% pay after the first year. I'm interviewing with abf tomorrow so I can't answer much.

I was just wondering if I should leave my current job as a city driver for estes. Been here 2 yrs but im looking at the big picture not just current $$ situation. Im guessing if u get hired, it will be after the new contract on July 1st. Less paperwork for them.
