yea they cant teach you floating as there not allowed per state requirments and its what the dmv will expect you to do for the road test if they see you floating gears they will flunk you. I prefer to float my gears personally. but know when i get a cdl i will have to double clutch.

@whitejackal its a good thing you havent driving a clutch before cause than its harder to double clutch when you got trained/used to not double clutching 4 wheel drivers that use clutches will hold the clutch till it goes in the next gear.

FYI floating gears is when you can switch gears by never touching the clutch you can pull the shifter out of gear at the right time and drop it in the next gear at the right time some go by rpms and speed others go by the sound of the engine i go by sound of engine. some say it is bad on the tranny others say its makes no difference I was told by a diesel mechanic that it doesnt efffect the tranny unless you try and force it but that is no different than forcing it with using the clutch. i heard that newer trucks were harder to float as the tranny hasnt worked in the grooves for it. never asked a mechanic about that though.

I float sometimes and I double clutch other times, I tend to double clutch more on the heavy loads
If im getting clutch leg I float a little more, just depends on my mood.

Also I drove 4 wheelers with clutches since my very first car, I had no trouble double clutching at all, the trucks will shift just regular clutching too, sometimes I catch myself being lazy and stick it in with one clutch press but no grinds
