I'd be careful about "switch my plates to SK". I'm not sure if is the same in Canada but IRP requires and actual presence in the base jurisdiction, not a address of a reporting service or POA. Awhile back a BUNCH of trucking companies found themselves in hot water for plating through a service in OK with no actual presence. Of course, the service was committing fraud for cheap plates and the companies didn't ask the right questions. It REALLY cost them. The point is if this guy is not 100%, his accounts can all be flagged and audited. If problems are found, then all accounts would most likely get a much harsher look. Just something to consider if the other jurisdictions won't deal with him.

    Sarabeara Thanks this.

I really appreciate your input, especially with your extensive experience. I don't think I would have a problem as my residence is out of SK, but I have a place in Alberta that I rent to put my equipment and have extra provincial incorporation in Alberta.
What I don't understand with IFTA is last year, I was IFTA in Saskatchewan and I paid 7500/year! And in Alberta, with the same kilometers driven in the same provinces, its $4500.
I moved my trucks to Alberta, for that very reason - but have recently been burned badly by a company and find myself unable to obtain IFTA in Alberta as they don't have quarterly or monthly payments that they offer in Saskatchewan. I asked my guy at Western Carrier services why he doesn't offer financing in other provinces, and he stated it had to do with something about being unable to have Power of Attorney status over the funds, that SK was the only province that allows this.
But again, thanks for the heads up.

Geez, without knowing how you're setup for tax purposes, (lease trucks or outright purchase), that seems really high. I've never paid over $3500/year with an Ontario base @ 63,500kg for all of Canada, and I wanna say that Quebec was the nastiest hit. I'm @ 46,500 now for Canada, 80,000 most states (with the odd one like Maine @ 100,000) and I'm paying $2700/year. We don't have monthly or quarterly payments though but other than that it seems reasonable vs. how bad they're sticking it to you. Hope you can sort it out.

JT. i'm thinking that majority of miles were in Sask. so sales tax is biting her in the butt until it's all paid.

Yep, that makes the most sense. I've always submitted a bill of sale with the prorate app and let the province sort out the apportioned taxes. :)

I asked if the Alberta prorate was financeable n they simple answer is NO! I know that being Alberta based it is not much difference for me to either prorate for AB/SK or just plate for AB. I have 1 truck now with a plate only good for AB n it was $2200 for the year, and another truck I plated for AB/SK was $2540.
