As in, I'm staying with friends trying to get into a company-sponsored driver program...assuming that plan succeeds, can't I plan on just staying out on the road as much as possible?

For background, most of my previous work has involved travel, so roots aren't really my thing anyway. I don't own much and have a place to stash the important stuff for when I do need it. No family worth mentioning, either.

So, can I reasonably expect to just be out on the road most of the time, and do better just renting a motel room with cable for the downtime? I don't have a problem with this, are there problems with this plan that I'm not seeing due to my noob status?

I keep seeing "how much time at home will I have" threads, but none going the other direction...how long before they kick me outta the truck and tell me to go take a break? *laughs*

I'd really like to hear the replies, too. And, best of luck getting in.

I pretty well lived on the truck for my first year, I would go 3-4 months at a time and just get a hotel when i needed a break from the truck. The only thing you truly need is a mailing address

I'm new and don't claim to know alot about this subject either. I have a wife so I need home time or I will see "THE BIG D" in my future. You will have a huge advantage over people with family and a home. If you want to go to the grand canyon just tell your DM you want "home" time and to route you that way. Same with Vegas for the weekend or Disneyworld. The great thing about trucking is the freedom of travel and the ability to see new things.

You my friend is what they are looking for.The slave masters want people just like you..No Home,No Car,No Belongings,No Roots,No Family,No Kids and No life...You are the manchurian candidate. They will love you to death and kiss the ground you walk on..

You can join the Millions of ''homeless truckers'' trucking down the highway for dog food wages, dog biscuits, buffets, hot dogs and road king points on your card...Good Luck to your new career in ''living in a truck''...

We should stop calling trucking, the trucking business..We should start calling this ''rent free'' or ''Sweatpant Mafia'' or ''Low Cost Living'' or just ''Homeless Truckers Are Us''..

THAT is what I wanted to hear...I'm used to the travel, even if I'm new to trucking, so it's not like I'm being ignorant due to being ignorant *laughs*. I want miles, and loads, and to see what's around the next bend in the road...

*laughs* If I don't get a job soon I'll be down to eating dog biscuits anyway, so I'd just as soon get paid for it...

I got a free place to stay on home time and moved my stuff into storage. You don't have to be a slave, or eat dog biscuits, or GOD FORBID wear sweatpants and flip flops. You can take a couple years to focus on work, income, and savings and when you're through that period you can do whatever you want. I'm through my first year plus a bit more and I have enough money saved to put down a good down payment on a house and buy a descent car in cash, or do whatever I want with it.

Not having a home to go to helps with your focus on making money out here, and as many will tell you that can be tough at first. I say go for it; it worked good for me.

I agree with you that there are a lot of guys doing this just for a place to set their head. For me I always prided myself on staying clean cut, well dressed, and absolutely professional. I used my time to save up a down payment on a home which I just bought last month. Now I stay closer to home and enjoy my life. There's nothing wrong with living that way to get to a goal. But I do agree with you that there are plenty of guys out there that could care less about anything but where they're stopping for dinner at.

I promise, I'm going for it I was just wondering if there were unforeseen repercussions to what my friends refer to as my 'crazy plan'. I don't really have many needs that aren't 'hand-to-mouth', as they say...
