As in, I'm staying with friends trying to get into a company-sponsored driver program...assuming that plan succeeds, can't I plan on just staying out on the road as much as possible?
For background, most of my previous work has involved travel, so roots aren't really my thing anyway. I don't own much and have a place to stash the important stuff for when I do need it. No family worth mentioning, either.
So, can I reasonably expect to just be out on the road most of the time, and do better just renting a motel room with cable for the downtime? I don't have a problem with this, are there problems with this plan that I'm not seeing due to my noob status?
I keep seeing "how much time at home will I have" threads, but none going the other direction...how long before they kick me outta the truck and tell me to go take a break? *laughs*
Do I *NEED* a home as a new driver?

I pretty well lived on the truck for my first year, I would go 3-4 months at a time and just get a hotel when i needed a break from the truck. The only thing you truly need is a mailing address

I got a free place to stay on home time and moved my stuff into storage. You don't have to be a slave, or eat dog biscuits, or GOD FORBID wear sweatpants and flip flops. You can take a couple years to focus on work, income, and savings and when you're through that period you can do whatever you want. I'm through my first year plus a bit more and I have enough money saved to put down a good down payment on a house and buy a descent car in cash, or do whatever I want with it.
Not having a home to go to helps with your focus on making money out here, and as many will tell you that can be tough at first. I say go for it; it worked good for me.Lady K, bergy, Krazy Scott and 1 other person Thank this. -
