30 years in hospitality industry, good income, wife, son, nice home, 2 cars, motorcycle, vacation
in Caribbean once or twice a year, dinners with friends, long "porch talks" with neighbours
etc., etc., and now ... Jesus ... I've got a couple of friends who are truckers. They told me so many
sometimes horror stories about their jobs and how they are absent from their homes for a week or two
at a time. They laughed at me when I told them that I would like to try it one day. Last fall
I took a course at a truck driving school and the moment the 500 HP beast was under my
control I fell in love with it! I have AZ licence now and a few choices where to go for my
training/apprenticeship. Do you think I am crazy? Do you know anybody that would do the same?
I am in my fifties (he, he, he) but I'm still loaded with energy and ideas. Oh yes, I am also sick and tired of
a job that became a very boring routine. One more time: AM I CRAZY?

You're not crazy at all. I know a guy that retired as a Col. from the Marines, then became a CFO for a major retail company, over all the stores, got sick of it and started driving trucks OTR. Said he's never been happier.

Get with a good company though. Living in AZ, look real hard at System Transport, run hard and make about $50K per year. Melton Truck Lines, run hard & make about $50K per year and take the wife along. Both of these companies have APU's on the trucks, which means with the truck engine shut off, you can still run the personal computer, flat screen TV, refrigerator, etc. and not run down the truck batteries.

Get a passport for Canada runs or Alaska runs. You probably already have the passport though. Get your tanker/hazmat endorsements in case you decide to be a local driver hauling fuel or chemicals and then start making over $60K per year.

    Go for it!

How old is your kid and how is your absence going to affect him? If you have that under control them-VROOM VROOM
I can tell you that I worked in customer service and farming all my life and driving a truck (ODflatbed) is the hardest job I have had and pays half the money. But, I am having fun.

Hey guys, most of your comments seem to be rather discouraging and negative. Most of you sound like
you don't like what you are doing (I mean all of the forum members) and money seems to be the
only reason to be a trucker. Is there anything in your job that you enjoy? Please don,t tell me it is
    your home time!

I'm the oddball. I enjoy never being home (been out since Christmas) and really don't care if I never go back. I think I enjoy waking up in different places too.
